Erich Weber, also known as Voyager and the Black Testament is an antagonist in the Xenosaga series. In life, he is a U.M.N. cyberterrorist.

Appearance and personality

Voyager is a ghoulish bald man with red eyes. As a Testament, Voyager wears black full body armor and a wing-shaped cloak.

Story arc

Xenosaga: Pied Piper

From his childhood, Erich had suffered from damage to his prefrontal cortex. To try and compensate for this, he constructed working memory inside the U.M.N.. He became a slave to information and a netholic, unable to control the growth of his curiosity. This led to him to discovering U-DO and hacking into the U.M.N.'s core structure. He dove into the U.M.N. repeatedly and became convinced that U-DO was akin to the end of the world. He would have nightmarish visions of U-DO. Rather than simply resign himself to the end of the world, he decided to consider himself U-DO's eyes and ears and nicknamed himself Voyager. He got in contact with Dmitri Yuriev, the first human to be tormented by U-DO. As Voyager, he became known as a terrorist within the U.M.N. and was responsible for shedding the blood of many people. He specifically targeted those that he called the People of Zohar, believing that by doing so he could finally fulfill his contract with U-DO.

Erich was able to keep his true identity a secret and worked as a subordinate for Jan Sauer, who was investigating Voyager's activities. He typically would work as an operator along colleague Mikhail while Jan led operations in the field. He also was responsible for developing the robot Bugs, who saw him as a father figure. During a dive operation to recover Goodwill Ambassadors that Voyager has taken hostage, Erich dives in himself in order to help Jan and the others when they are unable to escape. Shortly after diving in however he is deleted by an extermination program. Back in the real-world Erich's body is brought to the Galaxy Police Hospital but he awakens during the autopsy and walks out. He returns to Police Headquarters and tells the others that it was a character double that was deleted, not the real him.

Later, Jan witnesses Erich in the locker room, preaching words from Revelations and injecting himself with a drug. Jan and the others worry for him as his performance lags but believes it to be aftereffects of what he experienced. He assists as an operator on later missions and reveals to Jan and the others that Patriarch Julius has been assassinated. He continues to hide his identity as Voyager and is eventually arrested along with the others after the investigation is shut down. Erich assists in efforts to escape their capture.

Erich is eventually outed as Voyager when Sharon is able to match DNA from a victim of Voyager with DNA collected by Erich when he was believed to be dead. Jan and the others find Erich's body, him having dived into the U.M.N. They dive into Erich's brain and are able to speak with him. Erich admits that he is Voyager and explains how he became this way. Seeking a large number of victims who are the people of Zohar, he is able to do so at a gathering of individuals following the Immigrant Fleet. He is able to capture Sharon and Joaquin, who are among those present. Jan and the others confront him and he kills both Sharon and Joaquin. Bugs tries to stop him with a suicidal attack which fails. Voyager calls for U-DO to answer him, but nothing happens. Wilhelm then appears and tells him that it won't respond. He offers to make Voyager a Testament, which he accepts, becoming the Black Testamaent. Voyager overpowers Jan and tells him that he has the choice of becoming a Testament as well or being killed by him. In response Jan kills himself.

In the aftermath, Erich is publicly revealed to be Voyager, although he disappears and as such remained uncaptured.

Episode I

Voyager is briefly seen in Ziggy's flashback while Andrew Cherenkov transforms into the Gargoyle.

Episode II

Voyager's E.S. unit, Dan appears when Shion escapes from the Dämmerung and heads into space to catch up with the Elsa as it heads towards Old Miltia. Voyager appears in person at Ω System when he and the Red and Blue Testaments appear to kill Sergius XVII. The sight of Voyager, who is not wearing his Testament mask, gets Ziggy enraged and he fires at him, trying to kill him, to no avail. Brief flashbacks show Voyager appearing with a pool of blood on the ground. He appears in the final scene of the game with Wilhelm and the other Testaments. He does not have any dialogue in his appearances in this episode.

Erich Weber

Voyager's human name.

Originally from Planet Abraxas, his prefrontal cortes has been damaged since early childhood. His compensatory habit of constructing a working memory within the U.M.N. brought with it the side effect of net addiction.

Though his ID showed him to be 28 years old at the time of T.C. 4667, his true age is believed to be over 150 years old.

His official occupation was as a police officer, and his role was to provide external support as an operator to members diving into virtual space through the U.M.N. Additionally, one of his major responsibilities was to operate Bugs, the support robot.

A black-cloaked follower of Wilhelm. He appears before Shion and the others several times as a Testament. Ziggy called him Voyager, suggesting that the two shared some connection in the past. Voyager's Testament form.

Voyager

The testament of Erich.

A follower of Wilhelm. He appears before Shion and the others several times as a Testament. Before becoming a Testament, he was a Federation Police Inspector named Erich Weber. Erich, formerly a U.M.N. net addict, was struck with fear of the end that U-DO would bring; ultimately, this contact brought about in him an unslakable thirst for power.

Assuming the name Voyager, he derived pleasure from assimilating the consciousness of other people into his network and controlling them, hoping to eventually ascend to a level of being equal to U-DO. Once he realized his wish would never be fulfilled while he remained bounded by his human shell, he chose to cast aside his physical body and became a Testament.

Throughout his fight with Ziggy, he takes joy in exploiting the emotions in Ziggy's heart.
