chaos (ケイオス) is a playable character in the Xenosaga series.

Appearance and personality

chaos is a young boy with tan skin, bright blue eyes, and medium silver hair. In Episode I, chaos wears a black bodysuit with an orange vest with blue accents, white shorts and orange boots. At the Kukai Foundation's beach, chaos wears swim trunk in similar color of his usual attire. In Episode II, chaos wears an orange short jacket, orange pants with black straps around it and black boots, with the Swimsuit skill equipped, chaos wears green swim trunks with orange trims. In Episode III, chaos wears an orange vest with blue accents, a zipped suit, white karate pants, and black boots with red gems on each side, his swimsuit consists of greyish purple skintight tops and shorts with holographic goggles.

Story arc

History

chaos, or Yeshua at this time is the human incarnation of Anima, a failsafe installed in the universe. Yeshua and Mary Magdalene worked as the disciple for the Messiah, Jesus. However, they were persecuted by Wilhelm, the Guardian of the Lower Domain who saw him and Mary as threats to life of the Lower Domain, fearing the failsafe's activation. Yeshua and Mary then created Zarathustra as a means to save to save the universe by accessing the Upper Domain, via his Anima powers. However Zarathustra ended up falling in Wilhelm's hands who installed the Eternal Recurrence program into it.

Even though very little is known about his life from this time, Yeshua knew the previous incarnation of the Maiden of Mary. Yet due to their actions, his Anima powers almost activated, and in order to prevent the destruction of the universe, Mary divided his power into twelve Vessels of Anima, at the cost of Mary's life. The Vessels and Anima and Mary are later buried within Rennes-le-Château in order to hide them from Wilhelm. As a result, Yeshua lost his powers and became a spectator who now goes by the name "chaos".

Pied Piper

chaos appears in two scenes in Pied Piper and is not named. When Jan has a vision of himself as a child and sees some family members, chaos briefly talks to him, telling him not to chase the shadow as waiting beyond it is the prison of the soul. He says his memories won't give him peace and there are people he must protect. chaos speaks again near the end of the game when Jan and the others confront Erich/Voyager. chaos tells Lactis to protect "Canaan" with all his strength and that Canaan is inside of him.

Miltian Conflict

During the Miltian conflict, chaos assisted Canaan on a mission to retrieve the U.R.T.V.s. The two of them head down to Miltia on Asher, fighting off U-TIC forces along the way. While there he meets Jin Uzuki and does battle with Margulis along with him. After they split up, chaos and Canaan recover Junior and Nigredo.

After the Miltian Conflict

At some point, chaos joined the Elsa crew. During this time, he has a good relationship with Matthews and the rest of the Elsa crew and they appear to respect him a great deal.

Episode I

When the Elsa comes across Shion's escape capsule, KOS-MOS wants to ignore it and immediately head to Second Miltia. chaos, who was woken up by the commotion, appears on the Elsa, bridge and wants to rescue them, so they do so. chaos is happy to have more crew members on the Elsa which makes things more lively. When a gnosis appears on the Elsa bridge, chaos displays the power to make it disappear by touching it. He claims he just happens to have this skill and it isn't questioned further. When KOS-MOS sleeps in order to recharge, chaos visits her, being happy to finally meet her and wonders where the real her exists. chaos formally joins the party and helps out Shion and the others fight of U-TIC invaders when Ziggy and MOMO board the ship.

After the Kukai Foundation is framed for the destruction of the Woglinde by the U-TIC Organization, chaos is arrested along with Gaignun and the rest of the party. In order to prove their innocence, chaos and the party dives into KOS-MOS's Encephalon. There, he is paired up with Shion on Old Miltia. On the Song of Nephilim to rescue MOMO, after Jr. fails to kill Albedo, he identifies the latter as a U.R.T.V. and explain their purpose as weapons to destroy U-DO. In the ending, As KOS-MOS saves the ship from burning up in Second Miltia's atmosphere, chaos's hand glows.

Episode II

chaos arrives at Second Miltia along with the others and accompanies Junior, Ziggy and MOMO as they depart the Space Port and fend off Richard and Hermann. Afterwards he heads to Moby Dick's Cafe along with Junior where they meet up with Shion and then Jin. He accompanies Shion and Junior to the Uzuki residence and is able to talk with Jin in private that night. chaos accompanies the others to the U.M.N. Control Center where they plan to analyze the Y-Data inside MOMO, then head into her Subconscious Domain after realizing Albedo has laid a trap for them.

chaos heads to Old Miltia along with the other party members. At the end of the game he recovers Junior from the Space Time Anomaly after he kills Albedo. Speaking with Nephilim, he says this is not the end. After Abel's Ark appears and takes the Zohar, chaos tells Wilhelm, who calls him Yeshua, that he won't hold back anymore.

Yeshua, chaos's true name wears a white and green hooded robe and sandals.

Yeshua is the human incarnation of Anima. This power is a failsafe in the universe to destroy the Lower Domain if its near collapse by itself and to destroy the Upper Domain in the process. To prevent the destruction of the universe, Mary divided his power into 12 Vessels of Anima which were buried in Rennes-le-Château.

A slender young boy, his perpetually melancholic expression as well as the depth and scope of his conversations give rise to the impression that he halls from a higher plane of existence.

As he volunteers no information whatsoever about his past other than his name, everything about him, including whether he even has any memory of his past, is unknown.

His relationship with Matthews and the crew appears to go back for quite some time, and they all respect him highly.

His translucent blue eyes and silver hair are particularly notable features.

Episode III

The form of Anima, having assumed human shape and consciousness.

A slight boy with an expression perpetually brimming with sorrow and a farsighted and philosophical manner of speech. Distinguished by his transparent eyes and silver hair.

He is the human incarnation of Anima, a power derived from the collective unconscious and present since the beginning of the universe in this dimension. His powers act as a failsafe for all of dimensional space.

As the release of his powers would mean the destruction of dimensional space, his powers were divided up into parts by his antithesis, Mary Magdalene (Animus) in the distant past.

chaos regained his former powers through KOS-MOS's awakening, and left the possibility of a future in the hands of Abel-- U-DO that chose to remain in this lower dimension. chaos unleashed the power of Anima, performing a dimensional shift with Nephilim, the recipient of Mary's power, leading the consciousness of mankind to Lost Jerusalem.

He still exists as the universe's failsafe. Because of his fate ordained by God--or perhaps because people struggling against their own fates desire his existence--his future form still lies within the chaotic darkness. But chaos continues to believe. The future will be born illuminated by the radiance of consciousness.
