Alex (アレックス) is a guest character in Xenosaga I & II. He briefly joins Shion and KOS-MOS early in the game in the Encephalon Town Area northwest of the starting position. He can be controlled on the field, but acts on his own during battles. He can earn EXP, but cannot level up and always remains at level 1. He leaves the party after the battle against Goblin.

Appearance and personality

Being a mass-produced Weapons-Grade Realian, Alex looks nearly identical to any other of his group. He has pale skin and is blonde with yellow eyes. He is regularly seen wearing red combat gear. Like other Weapons-Grade Realians, he was developed and programmed with little sense of self and only puts thought into his identity as an individual when his lack of agency is called into question by Shion. However, despite Shion's urging to make him value his life more, Alex is insistent on staying true to his reason for creation.

Story arc

Alex is introduced at the beginning of the story on the space cruiser Woglinde. When Shion and KOS-MOS are in the middle of a combat test in an Encephalon simulation, they receive a message from the Woglinde's bridge ordering them to begin a joint exercise to meet the demand for satisfactory data. It is then that Alex, accompanied by Luis Virgil, enters the simulation and they introduce themselves. Alex begins to list out his serial number, but Shion insists on calling him by his nickname. When they enter battle, Virgil immediately opens fire at the enemies, having little care for the fact that Alex remains in the crossfire of his shots. Shion scolds Virgil, but he dismisses her comments and claims that Alex is nothing more than equipment anyway.

Later, in the Realian maintenance bay, Shion notices Alex giving off a rejection signal, so she gives him a tune-up to improve his ability to discriminate himself from others. Virgil walks in to berate the Realians and begins to argue with Shion about their rights as people. Alex then interjects and acknowledges that, while he and his fellows were manufactured and raised to be weapons, he takes pride in what he does, and that that is his own will. After Virgil leaves, a swarm of Gnosis attack the ship and Shion is knocked unconscious. When she wakes, Alex gives her a rundown of the situation and explains that their best option is to get to the escape pods where the other Vector staff escaped from. The two meet up with Virgil and his A.G.W.S. squad before they're nearly wiped out. Alex urges Shion to evacuate while he stays behind, insisting that it's what he and the other Realians were "born to do", but Shion stays. Alex approaches the Gnosis as Virgil snatches Shion's Connection Gear from her. As the Gnosis attacks Alex, Virgil uses the Connection Gear to activate the control code and set Alex to self destruct, despite Shion's desperate protests. Alex unceremoniously explodes and the Gnosis remains unharmed.

Trivia

• Alex replaces what was originally an unnamed Weapons-Grade Realian in Xenosaga Episode I. As a result, much of his dialogue is recycled from this unnamed character, and he even winds up sharing the same fate.
