The list of Driver Arts available to Rex when using the Aegis Sword

Weapons (sometimes called weapon classes) are a combat mechanic in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna ~ The Golden Country. Weapons play a significant role in determining the attacks a character may use.

Overview[edit]

Each Blade is associated with a single weapon. In main-game Xenoblade Chronicles 2, this weapon determines the animation and type (Physical/Ether) of auto-attacks, and the set of available Driver Arts: each Driver uses a specific set of auto-attacks and Driver Arts on each weapon. The role of a Blade (ATK/HLR/TNK) is determined by which weapon they use.

The set of Driver Arts a Driver has readied for battle, as well as their level, is shared across all Blades with that weapon equipped to that Driver. For example: if Nia has readied Jaguar Slash, Butterfly Blade, and Healing Halo with the Twin Rings weapon, she cannot use Gemini Loop with any twin ring Blade.

The weapons a Driver can use, and thus the Driver Arts they can use, are limited by the Blades they can equip. For example, Tora cannot use any weapons other than the Drill Shield, Mech Arms, and Variable Saber, because the only Blades he may equip use those three weapons. A Driver can only ready and level up Driver Arts for weapons for which they have (or at one point have had) an equippable Blade; even if it is possible for them to use a weapon, they first have to pull (or otherwise gain access to) a Blade with that weapon in order to manage the relevant Driver Arts.

WP is used to level up Driver Arts, and is separate for each weapon; a Driver will only gain WP on weapons they use in battle (or on which they spend items such as Weaponry for Noobs).

In addition to determining Driver Arts, the Specials of Common Blades are also determined by the weapon (in conjunction with whether they are male/female/brute/animal). Animal-type common Blades all have the Twin Ring weapon (and as such, all share the same four Specials). Other types of common Blades may have as their weapon the Greataxe, Megalance, Ether Cannon, Shield Hammer, Chroma Katana, Bitball, or Knuckle Claws; other weapons are restricted to rare and/or legendary Blades.

The specific combination of a Blade's weapon with their currently equipped Core Chip determines their Auto-attack stat, (base) critical hit rate, (base) block rate, weapon stability (which determines the variance in the damage attacks deal), any specific core chip effects, and visual model. Weapons tend to show strong trends in the first four values: if a weapon has higher-than-average crit rate with (say) a Moon Matter Chip in comparison to other weapons with this chip, it will typically have higher-than-average crit rate given any specific chip.

Each weapon also has a specific Just Range, a "sweetspot" range in which the the auto-attack stat is multiplied by 1.2x. This is not directly mentioned in-game, but it is indicated on the UI: when the player-controlled Driver is within their weapon's Just Range, the element icon in the lower right flashes.

Some weapons, primarily those of Blades acquired via DLC, share auto-attack and Art animations with other weapons, although they may have substantially different models.

In Torna ~ The Golden Country[edit]

Weapon classes in Torna ~ The Golden Country are unique: each Blade and Driver has their own weapon, and therefore a unique set of Vanguard Arts, Rear Guard Arts, etc. The weapons of Blades function similarly to those in the main game; Core Chips may be equipped and similarly modify stats.

The weapons of Drivers are somewhat different and behave more like accessories (they are even modified in the accessory menu); one may find and equip weapons using any of the seven non-Light elements, each with common, rare, and legendary varieties.

Example of Core Chip effects[edit]

The following list showcases how different weapons have differing auto-attack stats, critical hit rates, block rates, stability, and special effects when given the same Core Chip. While the following values are for the Tachyon Chip specifically, the ratios between differing weapons' values are roughly the same across all Core Chips.
