Common Blades are the most likely sort of Blade to be awakened from a Core Crystal in Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Generation[edit]

Unlike Rare Blades, for which there is exactly one of each with predetermined stats, Common Blades are created from templates with significant random variation.

Idea[edit]

The first part of the process is to get the idea level that will be used. As with generating Rare Blades, the Driver's highest one is selected, with ties broken at random, unless a booster forces that idea to be selected instead.

Power[edit]

The "power" of a Common Blade is essentially a general idea of how strong it is allowed to be.

First, a "base power" is generated based on the Driver's current level.

Then, a "crystal power" is added to this based on the Core Crystal used.

Finally, the selected idea level is divided by 5 and added. The result is then capped at 15 if it would be higher, meaning the Blade's final power level is between 1 and 15.

Element[edit]

The element of a Blade is determined at random, though elements that match the template are more likely. This is done by giving matching elements a ratio of 35, and others a ratio of 15, making matching elements about 2.33 times more likely. The Light element is exempt; Common Blades can never be Light.

Weapon[edit]

All weapon types (Twin Rings, Greataxe, Megalance, Ether Cannon, Shield Hammer, Chroma Katana, Bitball, Knuckle Claws) are equally likely and chosen at random.

If Twin Rings is selected, the Blade is automatically set to a male beast. Otherwise, it is humanoid, and its gender is randomly male or female.

Appearance[edit]

The higher the selected idea level, the more likely the the Blade will have a different appearance, dependent on its gender and species. Humanoids can have four different head types, while beasts can only have two.

In addition, there is a separate chance that a male Blade will be given a "brute" form.

Name[edit]

There is a large list of possible names that Common Blades can receive. Names come in three groups, based on the Blade's species and gender.

  • Group 1 is for males, both humanoid and beast.
  • Group 2 is for humanoid females.
  • Group 3 is for male beasts.

Presumably, names are chosen at random with no bias. It's not known how much the game attempts to avoid duplicates with already-existing Blades.

Personality[edit]

The "personality" of a Blade affects both its voice and how its affinity fluctuates in battle. Specifically, it affects affinity at the start of battle, and the magnitude of increases and decreases to affinity during battle.

Common Blades with different voices may share voicelines with other common Blades; if so, they often (but not always) share affinity modifiers. The following is a list of possible personalities for common Blades, identified via their voiceline when equipped in the menu.

Field Skills[edit]

The number of Field Skills is supposed to be based on the Driver's level. However, the function is bugged in a way that means the higher levels are unused, meaning Blades have significantly fewer Field Skills than intended at middle and high levels.

One of the skills is forced to be the matching (Element) Mastery skill. The others (if any) are based on the template. All field skills have a random maximum level from 1 to 3. Certain skills have a max of 5 levels, which is then capped at 3 for Common Blades, though the randomization is based on the 5 and thus results in a higher chance of a max of 3 (20%/20%/60%).

Pouch favorites[edit]

Blades can have 1 or 2 favorite pouch item categories, and 0 or 1 specific favorite items, based on the template. There are no limitations on which items can be selected.

Rarity determination[edit]

At this point in the process, everything has been determined. As the final step, the number of crowns is calculated, based on the total number of affinity chart nodes.

Takeaways[edit]

As a result of all the above:

  • The general strength of Common Blades will trend upward as a playthrough continues.
  • The luck of the Driver has no effect at all on any of this. Only their level and idea stats matter.
  • Even at minimum level, it is possible to get a very strong Common Blade, it's just very unlikely.
  • High-tier crystals produce significantly better Common Blades on average, but have no effect on any specific part of generation.
  • The odds of getting any skill in particular are just straight-up bad, and nothing can influence this. A setup that requires a specific skill will likely have to try many times to find one.
  • The number of crowns a Blade has is only a loose predictor of how good they are. A four-crown Blade could have many skills that are not very good, while a one-crown one could have an extremely useful skill and not much else.

As NPCs[edit]

Common Blades that are not the player's Blade can rarely be found as NPCs in both Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna ~ The Golden Country, sometimes involved in quests.

Garfont Village[edit]

Any of the party's Blades, including Common Blades, can be found as NPCs at various locations in Garfont Village, after Rex takes over the Merc Group. Any Common Blade that is either not currently engaged or not sent on a Merc Mission may appear. The locations they may appear at can be found here.

Dialogue[edit]

Common Blades that appear in Garfont have a few lines of dialogue, usually encouraging the party to take them with them.
