A Boy and the Sea[edit]

High in the sky, where only clouds can be seen, it is raining. The clouds are dark and stormy, with flashes of lightning.
The camera travels through the clouds until breaking through to open sky. The weather here is clear, the sky bright in the middle of the day. Shortly, there is a peculiar sight: sitting on top of a lower layer of flat and dense clouds is a small island. On approaching, the island looks to have a small construction and a crane, descending into the clouds below. The camera dives into the clouds following the crane, immediately submerging into a body of water.
In the sea is a youth, wearing a diving suit and descending. He spots a box-shaped object, so he raises his left arm and fires a wrist-mounted grappling hook from it, which sticks into the rocky surface nearby. He reels himself down and deploys boot cleats as he lands next to the box and walks towards it. Getting there, he sticks a device to its side. It expands into a flotation device, causing the box to lift upwards; the youth grabs onto it and follows its ascent. Once it reaches the hook of the crane, he latches the box on, stands on the hook, turns off his helmet light, and triggers the winch. The crane starts to lift.
Upon breaching the surface of both the sea and the clouds, the youth spins the crane around so he can deposit the box on the island. He then jumps off and removes his helmet. His name is Rex.
Rex
*sigh* We really do need to buy ourselves a new depth probe...
He folds up the rest of his diving suit, so he isn't as burdened moving about, before unhooking the crane from the box.
Rex
The ping was off by 150 peds to the east. That's not gonna fly!
An older and deeper voice with no apparent source responds.
Old voice
And what about the treasure, Rex? Was it in line with your expectations?
Rex has picked up a crowbar.
Rex
It seemed pretty solid. Didn't even have to reinforce it too much.
Even with the labor costs, we should be able to turn a decent profit.
Old voice
Honestly, it takes you two days to run the structural analysis...
A grassy protrusion lifts up from the front of the island. It turns to reveal it's a neck with a head - a rocky head with blue fins and a horn. It's the source of the old voice.
Old voice
Yet somehow you can gauge the profits in an instant?
The neck is connected to the island - it's actually the back of this large, friendly creature.
Rex
Don't go rainin' on my parade, Gramps.
You know I'm in the salvaging trade for the cash!
Rex jams the crowbar into a prospective gap in the box and starts to pull.
Rex
(strained)
A little business sense goes a long way, all...right?
The front of the box suddenly gives way and something big comes out.
Rex
Whoa!
It's a giant enemy King Crustip. It makes threatening motions.
Rex
I didn't expect THAT! You been living in this thing, big guy?
He has to dodge an attack.
Gramps
Rex!
Rex
No worries, Gramps!
He ditches the crowbar and ducks into the small building - his house - and grabs something else before stepping back out.
Rex
I think we know what's for lunch!
The item he grabbed is a folding sword. He unfurls it and prepares to fight.

The Legend of Elysium[edit]

The fight has ended. Rex starts to narrate some exposition for the audience.
Rex
An entire horizon of white.
A sea of clouds, and at its heart, the World Tree, piercing the heavens...
He slaps a Crustip claw on the grill, and proceeds to do various busywork while it cooks during the narration - watering his plants, sorting out the salvage found in the box, and putting the box back into the sea.
Rex
This... This is the world we call home...
Alrest.
Story goes that when the world was young...
Everyone in Alrest lived on the Tree, together with our divine father, the Architect.
According to the tales, it was a bountiful land. And the people there held the power to command even the heavens themselves.
They called that paradise...
"Elysium".
But then, one day... we were cast out.
Nobody knows why.
Perhaps we angered our creator, or perhaps it was something else entirely...
All we know is, we were forced to leave Elysium to live here in Alrest.
Where, it turns out, life was pretty hard.
But, when it seemed like we would surely die out, the Architect...took pity on us...
sending his servants, the Titans, to save us.
The few of us who survived settled on the Titans... and we've lived in harmony with them ever since.
But now, those Titans... *sigh*
are beginning to die out.
The Crustip claw is now bright red. Rex sits down ready to eat.
Gramps
A-ah... The brazier does my weary old bones much good...
Rex
Want me to move it, Gramps?
Gramps
No, that's quite all right. Leave it right there - a-ah...
Rex
Righto!
He grabs the seafood and digs in. Not even ten seconds later, there's a strange animal-like sound in the distance. Rex gets up to look out across the Cloud Sea as he hears another.
A large Titan appears out of the sea like a breaching whale. It makes one more cry as the blue lights aross its chest and body glow bright and then vanish, followed by it falling back into the sea. The wave of clouds washes over Gramps to not much effect.
Rex
Not another one... Been happenin' a lot lately...
Gramps
Mm... More so than before.
Rex
I wonder if anyone was living there...
Gramps
It seems not. And if there had been, they would have all left by now.
Rex
Makes sense...
Hey, Gramps, d'you think...Fonsett Village will be gone too one day?
Gramps
It would not be today or tomorrow, but one day, yes, it will fall...
Rex
And you, too?
Gramps
That's how it goes with us Titans...
There's no way around it.
Rex
Eventually... there'll be nowhere left to live.
Gramps
Sadly...
Rex turns the other way, to where the World Tree is visible in the distance.
Rex
So... You Titans were born up there, is that right?
Gramps
So they say, for what it's worth.
Mind you, I was born here, on Alrest.
As for my ancestors, who could say where they were born...
Rex
Can it really exist? This Elysium?
And the creator who's said to live there...
Gramps
A land of plenty, atop the World Tree...
If such a place did exist, perhaps we could all live in peace.
With no need for fighting.
Rex
Sure would be great...
For everyone...even folks in Fonsett.
If the divine Architect can see us now, I wonder what he thinks...
The camera pans up to get the first good shot of the World Tree's upper half.
With lunch done, Rex stretches out and slaps himself in the face.
Rex
All right! Back to making money!
He takes stock of what he's got.
Rex
I think this haul should be enough for today.
Oi, Gramps! Care for a little swim to the Argentum Trade Guild?
Gramps
(very aware it's noon)
You're planning on selling it now? It's getting toward my bedtime...
Rex
Don't play the lazy old man with me. There's plenty of sunshine left!
Gramps
Kids these days... No respect, I swear...
The scene changes to Argentum, a primarily Nopon trading nation based on a fleet of boats hanging from hot air balloon-like Titans. After getting Gramps sat up at a dock, he's approached by Hirkham.
Hirkham
Why, if it isn't Rex! How's business?
Rex
Going all right, else I wouldn't be here.
Hirkham
Fair point. So which one am I unloading?
Rex
We can leave that until I'm done negotiating. Shouldn't be too long!
Hirkham
Well, mooring is 15 gold per half-day.
Rex bolts.
Rex
I'll have your gold after I sell the stuff, all right? Later!
Hirkham
Hey, hold on!
You know I can't do credit... *sigh* He does it every time, too...
He looks up at Gramps hopefully.
Gramps
(deadpan)
No wallet, I'm afraid...
Hirkham
...Figures...
While on his way into Argentum proper, Rex spots a large black and gold ship in the port. Unlike every other ship around, it doesn't seem to have a Titan attached anywhere.
Rex
Awesome...
This thing's huge, and it's not even a Titan ship!

Hard Bargain[edit]

Rex has reached the Central Exchange and listed out what he's selling. Melolo gives him a quote. Rex is not happy with it.
Rex
What, that's it?!
Melolo
Is life, meh! This still more than I give to non-friend!
If you bring military supplies, then you get good price!
She looks over to the right. Some Ardainian soldiers and Urayan soldiers are keeping a distance from each other.
Melolo
Ceasefire between Mor Ardain and Uraya not keep for too much longer, methinks.
So weaponry is hot item!
Well? What friend think? I make it worth your while!
Rex
(ruffled)
I told you before, I stay away from that sorta thing.
Melolo
Oh, is shame! Rex good salvager, could be good way to earn pretty penny!
Waste of talent, if you ask me!
Anyhoo! Where were we?
Rex
(defeated)
I'll take your offer.
200 now, and you know what to do with the rest.
Melolo
Okie-doodles!
Sending monies to Corinne of Fonsett Village. Is right?
Rex
Yeah.
Melolo
Is beautiful thing! Sending money home at such young age. I touched!
Wish my own dum-dum littlepon did same!
Said littlepon is right behind her. She knows he can hear her.
Rex
It's 'cos Gramps doesn't charge rent, hehe.[1]
All right, I'm countin' on ya!
He turns and starts leaving.
Melolo
Roger! Pleasure doing business!

Pupunin, with Security[edit]

Rex gets barely twenty feet before running into another Nopon and his two human bodyguards. They look kinda silly.
Pupunin
Hello, Rex!
Rex
Pupunin! Been a while!
Pupunin
Rex looking high spirits! Ah, no, how say... Yes, peppy!
Rex
Been worse! So, you got something for me? New job maybe?
Pupunin
Something like that. Ah, by the way...
Rex come from Fonsett Village in Leftherian Archipelago, yes?
Rex
Yeah, that's right. Why d'you ask?
Pupunin
You should go straight to boardroom of Chairman!
Rex
(what'd I do)
Wait, what's going on?
Pupunin
Chairman Bana ask for Rex by name!
Rex
(disbelief)
The Chairman? For me?!

The Masked Man[edit]

Rex enters the Chairman's Room to see the large Bana at his desk.
Bana
Thank you for accepting summons! I Bana, Chairman of Argentum Trade Guild.
Rex
P-pleased to make your acquaintance...
Rex is distracted a bit by the two, uh, "personal dancers" Bana has stationed in the office. He's a fifteen-year old boy for crying out loud. They show minor acknowledgement.
Bana
Me hear from Pupunin that friend is salvager of some renown.
That being case, I have teensy weensy thing to ask of Rex!
Rex
A request straight from the Chairman?!
Bana
Reward is 100,000 gold.
Rex
A hundred thousand?!
Bana
Friend hear right! Actually, that just the advance.
Another 100,000 provided upon completing job.
Rex
(trying a little too hard)
200,000 gold in total...? I-I must be dreaming...
I'll do it!
I hereby swear to use every skill I possess to ensure this job is successful!
I promise I won't let you down! Hahahaha!
Bana
You agree without even hearing details of job?
Rex
O-oh, right... Um... What kind of job is it?
Bana
(second-guessing)
...You really have skills for this?
Rex
Of course, I'll be fine!
Bana
(quickly)
Meh, if you say. Here, crew will explain the task.
Bring them in.
The dancer on the right turns towards the side door.
Krujah
Sir.
She pushes the door open and walks out. It doesn't take long for a squad of people to walk in. In front is a Gormotti in a yellow jumpsuit accompanied by a white tiger. Next is a large man in dark armor paired with a strange alien-looking creature. And finally, a man in a silver coat with a horned mask. Rex can tell he's in the presence of some big shots, and loses his composure for a moment.
Rex
Drivers...? And...Blades?!
Whoa! They look so cool!
The silvery man, Jin, speaks first. It's clear from his accent that he's not from around here.
Jin
So... There's something that we want to haul up.
There were some current shifts. It showed up in an uncharted area.
But it's a long way down.
Rex
Nice... I like a good challenge!
Jin doesn't respond.
Bana
Bana offered to assemble team of veterans for this job.
But this crew very picky. They want small elite team, and only from Leftheria.
That when Bana have stroke of genius!
Should hire Rex!
Rex
(ego stoked)
Hah-ha! You made the right choice!
The Gormotti, Nia, doesn't bother to hide her snicker.
Nia
A child salvager?
Jin, don't tell me we're gonna have to hire some babysitters for this outing too.
Rex
What the hell? You look as much like a kid as I do, lady!
Nia
At least I wouldn't wet myself at the promise of a measly hundred grand!
Rex
What're you tryin' to say?!
Rex advances like he's trying to start something, but the white tiger steps forward. Apparently he talks.
Dromarch
(very respectfully)
*Ahem* Rex, was it?
I implore you to excuse my lady's discourtesy.
He bows.
Nia
(very non-appreciative)
Dromarch! What have I told you about speaking for me? Shut your-
She's interrupted by the tall dark man, Malos. He has the same foreign accent as Jin.
Malos
Drop it, Nia.
Though, I do see your point...
In any case...
It should be easy enough to make sure...
He lunges at Rex.
Rex
What-?!
Malos suddenly has a glowing blue sword in hand and is going in swinging. Rex dodges the swipes and gets enough away to unfold his sword and take his own swipe, which Malos blocks. After a tense standoff, he pushes Rex off.
Rex
Ugh!
What're you playing at?!
Malos
(vaguely impressed)
Well, well, well...
He retracts the sword's blade, leaving only the hilt.
Nia
Malos! What good is it, beating up a kid?
Malos
You said it yourself, didn't you? What if the kid's not up to it?
Nia
I said nothing of the sort!
Malos
You did think it though, right?
And anyway, now we know.
You'll do right enough. Though you don't look like a Driver...
Where'd you learn those Arts?
Rex
Gramps showed me a thing or two.
Even when I was little, that was his idea of playtime.
Malos seems satisfied.
Malos
Well, you've got some skill, I'll give you that. Guts, too.
Kid, you better work hard.
He replaces his blade on his hip and walks out of the room. Jin follows without a word, as does his alien-looking partner, Sever. Nia sighs in exasperation before following, while Dromarch bows and is the last one out.
Bana
(entertained)
Meh-meh-meh! Friends are such rowdy bunch!
He plops a bag of coin on the desk.
Bana
Here is advance.
Use to buy what gear you need, then go to dock on starboard!
Bana has arranged excellent vessel for you there.
Rex
You got it!

Hired[edit]

Rex has exited Bana's room.
Rex
Right then...
There are plenty of preparations to make, but first off I should probably check in with Gramps.
If I just took off on a some random ship without telling him, I'm sure he'd give me hell later when I came back!
I'd better head down the stairs and back to Goldmouth Return Port.

Gramps's Misgivings[edit]

Rex has gone back to Gramps to explain what he'll be up to next.
Rex
...and that about covers it. All right, I'll see ya later!
Should be back in a day or two. Take it easy, Gramps!
Gramps
(admonishing)
That does not "about cover it" in the slightest!
Why would you take a job you know nothing about?
You don't even know who your employer is!
Rex
(completely unconcerned)
This came straight from the Chairman, remember? What more do you need?
Anyway, I'm off. You can take a nap while you wait!
He makes a break for it.
Gramps
H-hey! Come back here, will you?! Rex!

Big Job Preparations[edit]

Main article: Big Job Preparations#Dialogue

Ready for Action[edit]

Rex has finished buying the stuff he thinks he needs.
Rex
Right, I've got the accessory I wanted and I'm all sorted for food.
I think that should just about do it.
There's still time left before I have to leave, so maybe I'll rest up at the inn.
I could head back to Gramps to rest, but he might try to give me another lecture, so...yeah, the inn seems best.
I have plenty of cash left, and it can't hurt to rest in a nice comfy bed once in a while.
The inn should be just past Rumbletum Canteen. Let's get moving!

Arrival at Lemour Inn[edit]

Utoto
Welcome to Lemour Inn! Rest-place of all traders!
Rex
I'd like to rest up a bit.
Utoto
Thank very much for custom! We has rooms free!
Rex decides not to rest yet.
Rex
Actually, I think I'll wait a bit longer before resting up.
Utoto
Very well! We always waiting!
Rex decides to rest at the inn. Time skips to him leaving.
Rex
This really is so different from sleeping in that little hut on Gramps's back.
For some reason I even feel like I've got a bit stronger!
Anyway, better head to the meet-up point.
It was at Goldmouth Exit Dock down on the ground floor, right?
I guess there's still time to look around Goldmouth a bit longer if I want to...
But I shouldn't dawdle too long!

Behold the Maelstrom[edit]

Rex arrives at the starboard dock to find the Maelstrom there, Argentum's biggest and best ship.
Rex
Wheeling out the Maelstrom for this? Bana sure has deep pockets...
Nia and Dromarch arrive behind him.
Nia
Gawking at a boat? What are you, twelve?
Wait, maybe you are twelve.
Rex
What's my age got to do with anything?
I can tell an awesome feat of engineering when I see one!
Nia
You don't close your mouth soon, you're gonna swallow a fly.
Rex
(to himself)
What's her problem? We're nearly the same age.
He looks down and sees that a loop of rope is around where Nia is standing.
Rex
(smugly)
Also, you might wanna watch where you stand, otherwise when we cast off...
that rope'll take your leg off.
Nia
(panic)
Eh?!
She leaps back out of the rope loop.
Rex
Gotcha.
Nia
Why, you little-!
Rex
Now look whose mouth's hanging open.
Jin, Malos, and Sever are watching from a short distance. They don't seem too impressed. The presumed head of the operation, Spraine, then walks up to Rex.
Spraine
Rex, we're heading out. There's no one seeing you off, right?
You got night watch. Till then, rest up inside.
Rex
Aye aye!
Later!
Rex heads in. Nia goes "hmph".

Boarding the Maelstrom[edit]

Rex speaks to Spraine in front of the Maelstrom.
Spraine
Never thought I'd see the day you'd be riding the Maelstrom, Rex.
Suppose it just goes to show how far you've come as a salvager, eh?
Well, I'm proud of you, lad.
Now, are you all set? We're setting sail soon as you're ready to board.
Are you ready?
Yes
Spraine
That's what I like to hear! Come on then, hop on!
We're heading into uncharted territory for this job, you know. I'm getting goose pimples just thinking about it!
Not yet
Spraine
Well, I say that, but don't worry. You can always come back here any time you think it's getting hairy.
It's not as if we're heading off to war or anything.
I'm not ready to shuffle off the mortal coil just yet, so watch how you go!

Welcome Aboard the Maelstrom[edit]

The C.S.E.V. Maelstrom heads out. There is no action or dialogue.

Inside the Maelstrom[edit]

Rex hasn't gone very far in yet.
Rex
We should be reaching the uncharted zone tomorrow, but there's plenty of time left until then.
I guess I could go and talk with the clients for a bit?
I still don't know as much about them as I'd like to.
Besides, it's not every day you get to talk to real Drivers!
Oh, and once I'm done with them, I'd better go see Monell.
I'm meant to be on lookout duty tonight - he won't be very pleased if I never show up.

Talking to the Clients[edit]

Nia[edit]

Rex
You seem awfully quiet. Did you get seasick or something?
Nia
Course I'm not seasick!
I'm just...not used to ships with this many salvagers on, that's all!
Rex
Well, if it's wearing you out now, you'll be a wreck by the time we reach our destination.
Nia
I can handle myself, all right?!

Dromarch[edit]

Dromarch
Master Rex... Are you prepared to begin salvaging?
Let us all work well together to make this mission a success.
Rex
Wouldn't have it any other way!

Jin[edit]

Rex
Hi there!
Jin
...
You're from Leftheria, are you?
Rex
Sure am. I was raised in Fonsett Village.
The village is right by the Cloud Sea, so I grew up swimming in the clouds.
That's why salvaging work comes naturally to me. I'm pretty confident in my skills, despite how I may look.
Jin
Very good.

Malos[edit]

Malos
What do you want, kid?
Rex
I'm called Rex, actually. Pleasure to be working with you.
So...I'm guessing you're not going to fill me in on what exactly it is we're looking for out here?
Malos
That's the idea. Need-to-know basis.
Why, are you curious?
Rex
Well, sure I am. But I'll do the work I'm paid for whether you tell me or not.
Malos
That's what I like to hear, kid. I just hope your skills are more advanced than your age.
Rex
My name's still "Rex," not "kid"...

Sever[edit]

Sever
Heheheh... Evading Malos's attack when you're not even a Driver? That's impressive, boy.
I look forward to seeing how you handle the work ahead.
Rex
Is that a compliment...?
Rex
Th-thanks, I think...

Time For Watch Duty[edit]

Monell
So you've finally arrived, have you? Well? Are you here to keep watch, or aren't you?
Rex
Shall I start on guard duty?
Start the shift
Monell
Ahhh, at last, I can get a breather. Think I've earned myself a drink or two.
It's not looking too good out there. I'd steel yourself for the worst.
If something's up, give me a shout. Don't worry, I won't be drinking myself into a stupor or anything.
Not just yet
Monell
All right, but be quick about it.
Happy hour only lasts so long.

Something in Common[edit]

Rex is in the crow's nest, doing his night watch. He goes "hm" as he spots something through his binoculars: a ship in the distance.
Rex
That's the black ship from the harbor. Is it...following us...?
Nia
Ugh, it's way too cold up here.
Nia has appeared behind him.
Rex
You-
Nia
I'll have you know I've got a name. It's Nia.
They've started boozin' below decks. You should join 'em.
Rex
Why aren't you there?
Nia
It's not that I hate it, I just really don't need a headache right now.
Rex
Huh. Good thing you're not a salvager, then.
Nia
Why's that?
Rex
Swim like a fish, and drink like one too. That's the Salvager's Code.
Nia
Ugh, sounds terrible. I don't think I'll be changing careers...
Rex
Hm. Probably for the best.
Anyway, I bet you Drivers earn a hell of a lot more than salvagers do!
Nia
So, kid...
Rex
My name's Rex.
Nia
Hmph. OK, Rex. Why did you start salvaging in the first place?
Rex looks outward.
Rex
That there.
Nia
The...World Tree? I don't get it.
Rex
You know, you find all sorts of things digging through salvage.
Some of it trash, some of it treasure... but all of it from people long gone.
Have you noticed how there's fewer Titans each day?
I saw one go under just the other day. It was a pretty big one.
There must have been loads of animals still living on it...
Living space is running out day by day.
Sooner or later, we'll be the ones sinking down into the Cloud Sea.
But up there... Elysium is waiting for us.
Nia
Pff... Bwahahahaha!
Seriously, kid? "Elysium"? Don't tell me you believe that guff!
It's just a lie for children, and that there is just an overgrown shrub!
So that's, uh...why you're a salvager?
Rex
If there is a way to get up there, maybe it's hidden below the clouds.
Is it really that crazy?
Nia
Seriously, though...
Rex
There'd be no need to fight over dwindling land and resources...
No need to worry about our homes sinking away...
Everyone could have peace and security.
I mean, a dream like that... Isn't that worth believing in?
Nia
Nobody can tell you what to believe, but...
Hmm..."Everyone," huh...?
Rex
What?
Nia
I always thought people were pretty selfish by nature. But you...
Rex
Huh?
Nia
D'you have parents?
Rex
(matter-of-factly)
Nope.
When I asked Gramps, he told me they died when I was just a kid.
Nia
"Gramps"... Oh, the same one who taught you to use Arts?
Rex
Yeah, he basically raised me himself.
He's not like us, though.
Nia
Not like...?
I'm not sure I catch your drift, but this Gramps of yours sounds all right.
Rex lets out a "huh".
Nia
And you're all right too, kid.
Not that different from me.
Time passes. It's deeper into the night, and the weather has gotten very dark and stormy.
Rex's shift must be over, he's resting inside. Spraine's voice comes through the intercom.
Spraine
We are in position. All personnel, report to stations.
Salvage team, suit up and proceed to hatch.
Rex grabs his helmet and moves out.

Into the Depths[edit]

The salvagers have assembled. Spraine gives the latest.
Spraine
Your target is located inside a shipwreck 450 peds straight down.
Searching the wreck while submerged is too high-risk for our tastes, so...
we'll be using flotation devices and cranes to lift the hull first.
Next, you'll split into teams and explore the interior. Once the target is found, retrieval can commence.
If that's clear, let's begin with attaching the floats. Get into position!
The crew gets going. Nia watches from the upper floor.
Nia
We're paying you lowlifes a lot, so don't screw it up!
Rex
You smug so-and-so...
Two smaller Titan ships are deployed from the Maelstrom as the salvagers walk out into the storm.
Spraine
And submerge!
Rex is first off the pier into the Cloud Sea. After descending a while, he holds up.
Rex
Is that it?
He's found what looks like a ship. The camera pulls back to show that it's several times larger than the Maelstrom.
Rex
It looks pretty ancient... Is that the...
propulsion mechanism?
I've never seen one that shape before... Which country made this...?
As the salvaging cranes begin to latch onto the ship, the salvagers attach huge floats the size of Rex to its hull. Once ready, everyone gets out of the way as they blast and inflate, working with the cranes to drag the ship to the surface. People observe from the Maelstrom's deck.
Nia
Whoa, that's massive!
Malos
The appearance matches our reports...
But it's what's inside that matters.
Jin
...
Spraine
Object is secure. Proceed to second phase.
The salvagers wait on the deck of the prize ship while the rest of the crew boards.
Nia
Excellent work! You're not half bad, you know that?
Rex
I do this for a living, remember?
Spraine
All teams, proceed inside when ready!
Malos
Right then, let's get moving.
Jin turns to Rex.
Jin
...You. With us.
Rex
Me?
Nia
You're gonna drag the kid along? Seriously?!
Malos
Guess he thinks you need all the help you can get.
Nia
Oi!
Malos
Gahaha!
Nia
Urgh!
Rex awkwardly doesn't budge.
Nia
Well? Don't just stand there! You've got your orders, haven't you?
He follows the rest of the group as they prepare to explore the Ancient Ship.

What a Driver Can Do[edit]

The crew heads towards the one visible door on the ancient ship's deck. A sudden bang sounds out from it, and they stop.
The door is then blown open by a very big and angry Lysaat. Rex has a "Whoa!" moment. Nia steps up.
Nia
Let me show you what a Driver can do!
She draws her twin-ringed weapons as the other salvagers bail.

Blown Away[edit]

The Lysaat has been felled. The salvagers are in awe of the Drivers.
Salvager 1
Amazing...
So that's how Drivers and Blades fight...
Salvager 2
So ruthless... It's like they're monsters themselves.
Nia turns towards the guy and glares daggers at him. They head off on their own path.
Rex
Nice! I'm sure glad these Drivers are on our side!
You too, Dromarch!
Nia
No need to get hysterical, it was a walk in the park...
Rex
Yeah, but still...
The other three members of the group have already made it to the opened door.
Malos
That's enough yapping, you pair of brats. Let's move!
The three head inside.
Nia
Tch... Talk about self-important.
Rex
(with a smarmy smile)
Gramps always taught me to respect my elders...
Beat.
Nia
Elders...?
Rex
Nia
Bwahaha!
While they're laughing, Pupunin and his bodyguards are sorta-kinda hiding behind some crates, watching the team head into the ship. He's relaying a video of it to Bana back in Argentum.
Bana
They make short work of monster...
These no ordinary fighters.
Big job in Mor Ardain going well too... There much money to be made from these people!
Oho-ho-ho-ho![3]

Fearsome Gatekeeper[edit]

Down in the depths of the ship is a large Aligo. It spots the group and roars at them.
Malos
Not planning on letting us past, huh? Sounds like a challenge.
Most of the group readies to fight. Malos and Jin just stand there because they're tough guys.

Addam's Crest[edit]

The Aligo has been removed. The party investigates the far wall.
Malos
Jin, check this out. There it is. Addam's crest.
There's a circular object in the wall with a design on it that resembles a teardrop or flame.
Rex
"Addam's...crest"? What does that mean?
Jin
You.
Open this door.
Rex
Me?
Jin
This door will only open to one of you people.
Rex
One of me? What're you talking about?
Malos
(suddenly intense)
Hurry up and do it! We're not paying you to ask dumb questions!
Rex
What the hell...? You can't treat hired hands like that...
Rex goes ahead to stand in front of the door.
Rex
Now, how do we open this thing?
He investigates the lower part for a bit before looking at the round object.
Rex
Oh, hey...
He reaches out to touch it. It instantly glows for a moment, followed by the door opening.
Rex
So that was a release toggle!
Rex walks into the foggy corridor beyond. The floor sparks with silent green ether as he steps.
Malos
Just as I thought...
Nia makes to follow.
Jin
Wait.
Nia stops. Both her and Rex turn around.
Jin
There. Open that door too.
Rex nods. He goes to the door at the end of the corridor and opens it the same way.
Jin
Let's move.
The rest of the group starts to follow Rex. He's pretty far ahead by the time he reaches the next room and spots what's inside.
Rex
Wh-what is that thing...?
An elevated path across a glowing circular floor leads to a cylindrical pillar in the center. A red object is lodged upright in a piece of metal in front of it, sword-in-the-stone style. Rex runs up to it, but is looking at the pillar - there's a person in a glass case on the front.
Rex
It's a...girl...?
He stares at the girl parts for a bit before looking down at the red thing in the floor, which could very well be a sword. It has a glowing green cross-shaped crystal in the center. It seems to have a heartbeat. The rest of the gang reaches the room and stops. Jin's eyes narrow.
Malos
(quietly)
Look.
Jin
(quietly)
Yes. No mistaking it.
That's the Aegis.
Nia
(was not informed)
The...Aegis...?
Rex is entranced by the sword. His hand is floating out towards the glowing crystal. Malos notices.
Malos
Hey, brat! Don't even think about touching that!
Rex
Huh...?
Rex realizes what he's doing and tries to pull away, but does touch the crystal first. Green sparkles poof out. Jin immediately grabs his sword and travels forward in a flash.
Rex
Ah...!
Jin has stabbed Rex through the back.[4] Then, just to be sure, he pushes it around until something clicks.
Rex
B-but...why...?
Rex looks down with blurry vision to see the sword coming out of him.
Jin
(emotionless)
Don't take it personally. It's an act of mercy.
At least you won't be alive to see what's coming.
He removes his sword and shakes it off once. Rex collapses. Jin then strikes at the red sword, shattering it, before turning and starting to walk away.
Malos
(mildly inconvenienced)
...Ugh. What a waste of time...
Nia
...Jin!
She runs up to him. He just walks by.
Nia
Why did you kill him?! Why?! What did Rex ever do to you?!
Jin
...
Nia
Jin!
He doesn't acknowledge anyone and keeps on walking.
Malos
(back to business)
Let's ship out the Aegis.
Nia, call the Monoceros!
Malos starts heading towards the central pillar. Nia is clearly not pleased with this turn of events.
Rex wakes up in a grassy field.
Rex
Uh... Ungh...
It's a beautiful day, there's a bell in the distance, and on a hill over there is a single tree. Someone looks to be standing beside it. Rex starts to head over there.

Resonance of the Heart[edit]

Rex approaches the person at the tree. It's the same girl he saw in the ship, though he may or may not recognize her at the moment, as she's facing the other way.
Rex
Ah, e-excuse me...?
Girl
It's such a mournful sound...
Rex lets out a "Huh?".
Girl
It hasn't stopped. Not... Not in all these years...
Rex
Hasn't stopped... You mean that bell sound?
Is the Praetorium somewhere nearby...?
Uh... Where are we?
Girl
This is...Elysium.
The land where, long ago, mankind lived in harmony with their creator.
It's where...
"We" were born.
Rex
Get out! ...R-really?
Rex has advanced to be right beside her, and can now see what's on the other side of the hill in the distance: a lake, a bunch of hills, and a small town with a church. He then turns to her and sees the green crystal on her chest, the same color and shape as the one on the red sword.
Rex
...Is that a Core Crystal...?
You're a...
Blade?
Girl
My name is Pyra.
Rex
What? Oh, right! M-mine is...
Pyra
I know you. You're Rex, right?
Rex
How did you know my name?
Pyra
Just now, when we came into contact...
Rex
Just now...?
Sorry... I can't seem to remember how I got here...
Pyra
You were...killed.
Stabbed through the heart by Jin.
It comes back to him. He sure did get stabbed by Jin.
Rex
Jin? ...Through the...?
He looks like he's going to be sick for a moment.
Rex
I remember now! That bastard stabbed me!
He then freaks out and starts trying to run back to where he came from.
Rex
Oh man! This is bad! Everyone in the Guild is in danger!
He then remembers a key detail and falls to his knees.
Rex
(punching the ground in anger)
No, wait! I can't do anything if I'm dead!
Titan's foot, if I wasn't dead I'd kick that guy's arse!
Pyra appears hurt for him. She starts to approach.
Pyra
Rex, I have a request.
Pyra
Can you...take me to Elysium?
Rex
Elysium...? But...isn't that here?
Pyra
This world is merely a memory. An ancient, half-forgotten memory of what once was.
The real Elysium lies in your world...
atop the World Tree that rises from the heart of Alrest.
Rex has stood back up by now.
Rex
Memory...? So it's like an illusion?
But there's no way.
I'm dead, remember? How can I help if I'm not breathing?
Pyra
I will give you half of my life force.
That way...you can be revived...
As my Driver.
As the Driver of the Aegis.
Rex
The Driver...of the Aegis?!
Wh-what the...?!
Pyra
What will you do, Rex?
Rex
Is this place really your home?
Pyra
It is.
Rex
And it really exists...?
Pyra
Rex, I know what you're thinking, and you are correct.
By...coming to this place...you can save the world.
Save it from the slow demise that is its fate.
Rex
We...wouldn't have to live...in fear.
Then there's only one choice.
I'm in. Let's go to Elysium!
He excitedly closes the distance between them again.
Rex
I'll take you there myself!
Pyra
Thank you, Rex.
Now, place your hand on my chest.
Rex
(uh, phrasing?)
What?! A-are you sure?!
The Core Crystal starts to glow and beat much like that of the sword. Rex carefully places two fingers on it. Green light flows out of Pyra's chest and into Rex's. After a few seconds, an eruption of green flame covers them both.
Back in the Ancient Ship, Rex twitches, before being hoisted up onto his feet like a puppet. Green light flows around him and coalesces into a Core Crystal in his hand, which quickly transforms into a new copy of the shattered red sword. He flourishes it, opening its casing to reveal the fiery energy within. With an X-shaped crystal now on his chest, he's ready.
On the ship's deck, Malos has the container holding Pyra's body slung over his shoulder as the group readies to leave.
Malos
Nia. End them.
Nia
End? Like, what?
Malos
The price for their lives has already been paid in full.
Now that we have finally obtained the Aegis...
The fewer living souls know about it, the better.
The other salvagers are hanging around, presumably waiting for everyone to return from searching the ship.
Nia
I-I can't do that! These people haven't done anything wrong!
Malos
(mocking and threatening)
I don't understand you.
Now, now. Have you forgotten why you came here to begin with, Nia?
Nia
N-no, but...
Malos
Oh, for the love of...
Fine. I'll handle it myself.
Malos turns around. Nia doesn't like what's probably about to happen.
The entire container holding Pyra suddenly lights on fire.
Malos
Uck..! What the...?!
He hucks it away as the fire intensifies and blossoms into a huge pillar of flame. A fireball comes out the top and lands on a spire above the ship's entry door, revealing Pyra, awake and with an X-shaped chunk missing from her Core Crystal.
Rex
Aaaaiyah!!!
A circular part of the floor heats up. A fire pillar bursts through as Rex jumps out.
Nia
Rex?!
Rex pants from the effort as his half of Pyra's Core Crystal shines. Many fires now burn across the ship's deck.
Malos
You! And that sword. Can't be!
Rex stands up and points the sword at Jin.
Rex
It's kinda low to stab a man in the back...
You bloody psychopath!
Pyra!
Pyra
Here!
Rex
Cover me!
Pyra
Got it!
The two of them leap into action. Jin makes to grab his sword.
Malos
Jin. Leave 'em to me.
Rex
Aaaaiyah!!![5]
Malos
Hngh-!
Rex and Malos lock blades.
Rex
Gah!!!
Malos
Sorry, kid.
He pushes him off. He's mixed between upset that this is happening and enjoying the chance to do some more violence.
Malos
I can't let the likes of you just claim her power for yourself.
This is as far as it goes.
Pyra runs at the confrontation. Sever takes a swipe at her, which she flips away from.
Sever
Aegis! Over here!
Rex resumes the swordplay with Malos.
Rex
Just leave it out!
Nia
Give it a rest, Malos! Can't you see he's just a child?!
Malos
(increasingly angry)
A child? Don't make me laugh!
This kid...
has made himself the Aegis's Driver!
Nia
The Aegis's...Driver? Rex is...?
After some more fighting, Malos lands a boot that propels Rex a good distance away. He chucks his weapon up to Sever.
Sever
You're done!
He sends a cross-shaped windblast at Rex. Pyra steps in and blocks it with the standard Blade barrier. The salvagers are getting anxious.
Rex
Thanks, Pyra!
Pyra
You're welcome. Now, don't let up!
Rex
Yeah!
They run back towards Malos. Sever shoots some more projectiles, but Pyra blocks them.
Rex
Aaaaiyah!!![6]
Rex reaches Malos and Sever and swings his sword at them a bunch of times. Nothing comes of it.
Rex
Everybody, go, now! Quick!
The salvagers start to dash back towards the Maelstrom. Malos leaps backward.
Sever
Malos!
Here!
He passes the sword back to Malos, who catches it midair.
Malos
I don't think so!
He changes the sword to a straighter shape as he lands on an elevated part of the ship, and starts charging an attack as the salvagers cross their boarding ramp.
Rex
Hey, you bully! Over here!
Rex shoots a fierly projectile at Malos, who has to block it.
Malos
Ngh-!
He looks up to see Rex and Pyra jumping up in unison.
Rex
Pyra
Burning Sword!!!
With their sword lit up, they come down on Malos. Everyone looks stunned at the bright explosion. The smoke clears, showing that they're pressing against Malos' weapon, now in more of a shield shape.
Malos
(more disappointed than anything)
You brat.
How can a nobody like you...?!
...Ah, but with those eyes...
I guess I should've been more wary from the start...
Rex
What d'you mean?!
Malos charges a shadowy ball with his free hand.
Malos
Like I'd tell you!
He swipes the shadow at them, but they push off.
The Maelstrom shoves off. Rex and Pyra land back on the ancient ship's deck, ready to fight Malos and Sever some more.

Crossroads of Destiny[edit]

The two pairs have been fighting.
Malos
You're good, kid. It's no simple feat to control the Aegis like that...
Rex yells about halfway through Malos' line and charges at him again.
Malos
However.
He charges a dark ball in his hand again. Rex jumps at him, but he uses this hand to catch the blade. He then yells as he gives Rex a gut punch with the other hand, followed by throwing the blade behind himself, making Rex drop it and sending both across the deck in different directions.
Rex
Agh!
Pyra is occupied by dodging Sever's fists.
Pyra
Rex!
Malos
Don't get cocky, you little shit!
He starts to dash towards Rex. Nia has decided this is enough.
Nia
Dromarch!
Dromarch
Understood!
Nia gets on Dromarch as they run to block Malos. Dromarch primes a water blast.
Malos
What?!
Malos stops as Sever blocks the attack. Dromarch steps in front of Rex.
Malos
Get out of the way, Nia! Have you gone mad?!
Nia
You're the one who's off your nut, waling on a child!
Malos
Nia... I don't think you quite comprehend your position.
Nia
I get it, but-
Malos
You're starting to piss me off!
Pyra runs in from offscreen, picks up the Aegis Sword, and circles back around.
Pyra
Hya!
She jumps over Sever to come at Malos.
Malos
Ngh-!
He blocks the attack as Pyra flips over him. They fight as he pushes her towards the far side of the deck.
Malos
Agh!
Pyra shoots fireballs forward as she continues to retreat, until Malos blocks enough at once that she can attack through the obscuring flames. They lock blades.
Malos
You're pretty sharp for someone who's only just woken up.
Rex is managing to stand up back over there.
Rex
Pyra!
Malos
Takes me back to 500 years ago...
What's the deal with that appearance?
I'm guessing your goal is Elysium...
Pyra
That is our dream!
Malos
Then I have no choice but to stop you!
He uses his hand-shadow power to push her off. She lands safely back near the edge of the deck. The black ship Rex spotted earlier then arrives behind her. It deploys an array of gun turrets.
Rex
Pyra, watch out!
Pyra
Huh?!
The turrets open fire. Pyra blocks it with her barrier but it still looks pretty hefty.
Rex
Pyra!
Rex runs towards her.
Pyra
Ahh!
She gets pushed backwards by the force of the impacts and skids across the deck. Rex gets to her.
Rex
Y'all right?!
Pyra
Mm, more or less...
Nia
Stop this!
Dromarch steps in front of the two and uses his barrier to take the next barrage of shots. When the smoke clears, Nia is being propelled through the air.
Rex
Nia!
Rex gets down from the ship's deck and runs across the hull as he chases where she's flying towards. He leaps off the edge to catch her and uses his anchor shot to grab onto the ship, preventing them from falling any further.
Rex
Ungh-!
Nia isn't responding, she must've gotten knocked out.
Malos
You're a tough one, kid, but there's only one way this can end!
The turrets focus on Rex.
Rex
Oh sh-
A bunch of explosions travel across the black ship.
Malos
What's that?!
Rex is visibly confused until he hears a strange call and sees a giant winged creature swoop down from the clouds.
Rex
Gramps!!!
Yes, Gramps had had those wings the whole time, they were just hidden beneath the clouds. He flies by Rex and comes back around for another pass, looking across the ancient ship's deck.
Gramps
Jin... Still you persist...
And is that...
Malos?!
Jin
Azurda...
Gramps shoots fireballs from his mouth across the ship's deck, forcing Jin to use his sword to defend himself. With the deck covered in flames and smoke, Gramps dips to where Rex is hanging.
Gramps
Rex, get on!
Pyra gets on Dromarch, who follows Rex's path down to where he hangs.
Rex
Got it!
Pyra
Rex!
Dromarch scoops Nia up with his mouth as Pyra grabs Rex by the hand and gets him up onto Dromarch's back. Dromarch then waits for a good alignment and leaps onto Gramps' back.
Gramps
We're going! Hold on tight!
He peels away into the sky.
Malos
Stop them! Open fire!
A series of lances are shot towards the Titan. It's difficult to tell whether they're hitting or just blowing up.
Malos
Turn her around! Ready the cannon!
Jin
It's no use. They're out of range.
Malos
Dammit! They gave us the slip...
Jin thinks about it for a moment. The barrage stops.
Jin
Turn around.
Malos
(suddenly calm)
We're not chasing them?
Jin
The Aegis is awakened... That's enough for now.
I'll have Akhos hunt them down.
Malos shrugs.
Malos
Hmph.
That will have to do...
Chapter One:
Encounters

Notes[edit]

  1. This "hehe" comes out more like "heh-hay", like Rex thinks this is something to brag about.
  2. Continues from the field music.
  3. This comes out as more a "Mm-hah-hah-hah" sort of laugh.
  4. At this point, there's a "Hrk... Ugh..." caption, but it was changed to be hidden in an unknown update.
  5. Uses the same voice clip as the last "Aaaaiyah!!!", but cut off slightly.
  6. Uses the same voice clip as the first "Aaaaiyah!!!", not even cut off this time. There's only one entry in the caption list (the same one is referenced three different times), so maybe they thought they only needed one take as well. Given the community reaction, they were wrong.
