Rennes-le-Château is a sub-area on the Floating Landmass in Xenosaga Episode III - Also Sprach Zarathustra.

Story

Rennes-le-Château is first seen at the beginning of the game when the Testaments recover a body from a stone coffin stored there. After traveling through the Ancient Temple on the Floating Landmass, the party climbs their way up to Rennes-le-Château, a gravesite. Shion recognizes it as the place where she has met with Nephilim in her dreams. They make their way to an underground tomb where they find 12 gravestones bearing the names of the E.S.s. Heading in further they find the empty coffin and a crucifix-shape stoned that Shion recognizes as a place they visited while in KOS-MOS's subconscious domain (Episode I). Suddenly T-elos appears and attacks the party, accompanied by Roth Mantel. T-elos is too strong for the party and defeats KOS-MOS. A mysterious light engulfs the place and the party finds itself brought back to Old Miltia from 15 years ago.

Shion finds herself back in Rennes-le-Château near the end of the game after traveling to the Underground Ruins. Making her way into the same underground tomb as before, she finds chaos waiting for her along with a coffin containing the body of Mary Magdalene.

Lore

  • Rennes-le-Château is named after a small village in south France. Said to be the home of Mary Magdalene, it had been the source of various legends and traditions including those about Jesus' bloodline and the Holy Grail. It is not revealed whether the Rennes-le-Château was intended to be the same place as in real life.
