Zarathustra
Zarathustra is a device in the Xenosaga series. It is the key to enact the Eternal Recurrence. It is also the namesake of Xenosaga Episode III - Also Sprach Zarathustra, being depicted on the logo. Zarathustra is housed on the planet Michtam in some underground ruins.
Description[edit]
Zarathustra takes the appearance of a colossal energy cube surrounded by two metallic-holographic rings; the awakened Vessels of Anima also surrounds the cube and a gold base with the Zohar embedded in it. It resembles a gigantic version of the Compass of Order and Chaos. After going out of control after the destruction of Shion's pendant, Zarathustra takes the form of a gigantic amalgamation of the E.S.s with Joshua's torso as the core, Naphtali's legs floating behind, its left wing consists of Dan's wing, the right wing consists of Issachar's drones, and the wings of Levi, Zebulun's drones float above its head, its head comprised of Dinah's head, its left arm initially comprised of Reuben's left arm, but is replaced with Asher's left arm mid battle, its right arm initially consists of Judah's right arm, but is replaced with Simeon's right arm mid battle, its left leg consists of Joseph's left leg, its right leg consists of Gad's right leg and the gold base behind it.
Originally Zarathustra was used by humans in ancient times to invade the Upper Domain. Wilhelm later obtains Zarathustra and installs the Eternal Recurrence program into it. Zarathustra is one of the Relics of God.

Story[edit]
History[edit]
Zarathustra was created by people in ancient times on Lost Jerusalem by Mary Magdalene to ascend to the Upper Domain, orchestrated by Mary herself and its power source is Yeshua. After Mary's death, Wilhelm obtained Zarathustra and installed the Eternal Recurrence system in it. Wilhelm's goal is to use Zarathustra as the central device to repeat the Eternal Recurrence in an endless time loop. Before Lost Jerusalem vanished in an Space-Time Anomaly, Zarathustra was moved to Abraxas (later known as Michtam) by the Immigrant Fleet.
Xenosaga[edit]
Despite being mentioned multiple times throughout the trilogy, Zarathustra doesn't physically appear until Episode III where Wilhelm and Kevin are seen observing it after they learned that Mary Magdalene's conciousness has awoken within KOS-MOS instead of T-elos. At that moment, Zarathustra stirs, causing the Gnosis phenomenon intensify even further as they are called to Michtam.
When the party finally confronts Wilhelm within its chambers, he tries to convince Shion Uzuki to power it with her pendant. When she refuses, he tortured her until Kevin severed his arm to save her. Wilhelm then attempts to persuade KOS-MOS into activating Zarathustra, only for her to destroy the pendant.
With the pendant destroyed, Zarathustra goes out of control, with Joshua assimilating various E.S. parts to become a colossal mechanical monstrosity, Wilhelm claims if it is not stopped, the universe will eventually vanish. While Kevin suppresses the system, he instructs the party to destroy Zarathustra in which after a long battle, succeeds. Its remains later vanishes when Nephilim and chaos uses their power to commence a dimensional shift to Lost Jerusalem.
Lore[edit]
- The crystals of the Underground Ruins make up the main body of Zarathustra.
- Shion's pendant, the ignition key of Zarathustra, is also made from these crystals.
- The compass-like object is the control terminal.
As a boss[edit]
Zarathustra is the final boss of Xenosaga Episode III and the entire trilogy.
Database[edit]
Episode III
Zarathustra
An eternal recurrence device.
A device created by people in ancient times. The giant compass-like object is something like a control terminal; the main body is actually the crystalline structures that spread out beneath the surface of Michtam; Shion's pendant, which has the same structure, is its control key.
It was originally created with the goal of invading the world of God, but Wilhelm, who has the role of "protector of lower-dimensional space", added its functionality as an eternal recurrence device.
In order to set off the eternal recurrence, one must have control over the power of God (the power of chaos). The awakening of each Anima, as well as the guidance of Mary, who shares an emotional bond with chaos, has all been for this purpose.
As observational terminals for God, Abel and the Ark (i.e. U-DO), need to be sealed in lower-dimensional space. Consequently, the ability to induce them towards Zarathustra has also been added.
Trivia[edit]
- Zarathustra is the name of a track on Xenosaga I's soundtrack, despite never being mentioned in that game.
