Wilhelm and Zarathustra, the instigator and mechanism of the Eternal Recurrence.

The Eternal Recurrence, also known as the Eternal Circle is a system in the Xenosaga series. It effectively "resets" time before the destruction of the universe.

Description[edit]

The Eternal Recurrence is a system installed into Zarathustra by Wilhelm in an effort to save the universe from destruction. Whenever it is invoked, all consciousness forgets its previous life, trapping the universe in a time loop; even Wilhelm himself is affected. In order for the Eternal Recurrence to occur, Wilhelm must seal away the eyes of U-DO, Abel and Abel's Ark to prevent it from observing the universe.

Story[edit]

Wilhelm uses Zarathustra to reset time numerous time, in an effort to save the universe from collapse whenever either Anima is on the verge of activating, or the Collective Unconscious is on the verge of collapse. It is unknown how many Eternal Recurrences occurred, but it is implied that after many Recurrences, humanity began to reject the Eternal Recurrence. In the underground depths within Michtam after Shion Uzuki refuses to use her key to activate Zarathustra for another Recurrence, Wilhelm tortures her until Kevin Winnicot intervenes and stops him. KOS-MOS then destroys the key, preventing the Eternal Recurrence from occurring again. Wilhelm is disappointed because without Zarathustra, the universe will eventually collapse. However, it is suggested that the answer to stop the universe's collapse lies in Lost Jerusalem.
