Definians are a race of Humanoids in Xenoblade Chronicles X. This race is composed entirely of females and is led by a leader considered the mother of them all, Fortun. Definians have the ability to copy the appearance of other races, not just in appearance but also in speech and personality.

They arrived on Mira with the Ganglion, although some within their ranks do defect for various reasons.

Description

A unique race composed entirely of females. Definians possess the ability to manipulate other organisms' visual perception, and can make themselves appear to be anyone that they wish. This disguise, however, will only remain in place so long as there is no physical contact between parties.

While the Definians' talents make them perfect spies for the Ganglion, they also have a well-earned reputation as fearsome Skell pilots.

Lore

The Definians first appear during the mission Attack on Biahno Hills. A Definian posed as a BLADE named Clemons to lure BLADEs into a Ganglion trap, and once captured disguised herself as another BLADE named Suriella. The team has to catch her before she causes more damage. While in pursuit, Cross finds the "real" Clemons, who tells them to find a dead body in the Industrial District. This body turns out to be the real Clemons, who died a week prior to the mission.

Both Clemons and Suriella are revealed to be Definian spies. The two end up fighting outside the city, with "Clemons" accusing "Suriella" of being too soft thanks to "Suriella" taking her time to blend in and understand their ways. "Clemons" claims this method makes her grow attached and accuses her of betraying the Ganglion, and then reveals herself as DE913: Dieara. With one attack, she disables Suriella's disguise revealing herself as HT665: Erio. Dieara is interrupted before she can finish Erio, since Cross and their team defeat her in battle.

HT665: Erio reveals she was sent to infiltrate the city, pretending to be Suriella, a woman who had died in the chaos surrounding the founding of New LA. However, she had doubts about being part of the Ganglion after being around humans for so long, and ultimately used her powers to point Cross towards the truth. At the end of the mission, she surrenders herself so that humanity can learn more about one of their enemies.

Additional Notes

• According to Mia, the Definians will probe a person's mind in order to collect the data required to impersonate them. The impersonation is made more accurate if they know about the person's habits and tics. However, a perfect nuanced understanding of relations is impossible, so Definians will extrapolate if they don't have perfect information, which can be noticed by a keen observer.
• Definians do not physically change when they imitate another being: it is simply an advanced optical camouflage. Physical contact will break the illusion.
• The code in front of each Definian's name is a reference to a tarot card. Also, their names tend to resemble the full card name as well.

In combat

Definians primarily start fight using electric attacks like Collider to do area of effect damage. However, they have their own version of Offensive Stance that boosts their critical damage as well as their melee attack and accuracy. Their most powerful attacks are their beam-based Blade Rush and Blade Combo.

It's also a good idea to be aware of Time Bomb. When a Definian Howls, she can inflict this status which will deal heavy damage to a player after 10 seconds (50% health if the Definian Clone uses it). Either finish the fight quickly or equip Resist Time Bomb.

Unlike other humanoids, all normal Definian fights play Black tar rather than the normal Humanoid/Mechanoid fight theme.
