Saltats are enemies in Xenoblade Chronicles X under the Theroid classification. These massive birds are known for the large jewel in the middle of their belly, the eye-like patterns on their wings, and the loud trumpet-like noises they make.

Saltats are similar to Liceors.

Description

Though flightless, these avians make their homes at high elevations, preying on fish and crustaceans that they suck into their trumpet-like mouths. Relatively intelligent creatures, some saltats are known to also display a penchant for combat.

During mating season, males blow rainbow bubbles as a way to attract a mate. They then perform a frenzied dance of courtship as the bubbles drift. Failure to impress will dash all prospects of mating, spurring young males to improve themselves by learning at the feet of senior saltats. The relationship is mutually beneficial, with disciples blowing bubbles to help their tutors' own romantic endeavors. Even after gaining nests of their own, they continue to look after their aging masters.

In combat

Saltats seem to have two modes. When fighting normally, saltats will fire quick bursts of Ether Spheres at their enemies as if they were long ranged fighters. Their Dance Dance Dance acts as a Ranged Attack Up buff in most cases, although the Galaxial Jewel-dropping saltats use it to gain Evasion Up.

Saltats enrage at 70% health (or if the jewel appendage is destroyed), however, and they immediately take up a melee stance and start using powerful attacks like Rising Bird and Flying Megaton. Watch out for the electric Mach Punch, as it can Topple flying Skells.

However, hearing the silly noise they make when they die makes combat with them worth it.

Variations

Saltats come in eight variations, based on their jewel type (four types) and their color (red or blue):

• One variety drops the Golden Jewel.
• One variety drops the Demonic Jewel.
• One variety drops the Sky Jewel.
• One variety drops the Galaxial Jewel.

In each case, destroying the jewel at the center guarantees the drop (with at least 75% Treasure Sensor active).

In general, all saltats drop these items:

• Saltat Horn from the main body.
• Glossy Saltat Fan from the two wings.
• Vibrant Plume from the main body.
• Filthy Wing from the main body.
