Taura Melchior, typically referred to as just Taura is a character from Xenogears. He is one of the 3 sages of Shevat.

Appearance and Personality[edit]

Taura is an old man with white eyebrows, black eyes and a bald head. His skin has a blueish tone and he has a nose so flat that just his nostrils appear on his face. It is unknown whether this is due to him being a demi-human or if it is an effect of his advanced age and the life extension treatments he has undergone.

Taura is among the most intelligent people of the current era and is able to utilize his skills with nanotechnology to greatly assist others. While very helpful to the party, he resents the selfishness of Shevat.

Story arc[edit]

Taura is one of the three sages of Shevat. He is a scientist that focuses on nanotechnology. Discovering a thesis from Kim when investigating the ruins of Zeboim, he was able to revive nanotechnology and improve upon it with his own research. He taught nanotechnology to his student Krelian. Krelian's own research into life extension treatments was used to enable Taura and the other elders of Shevat to continue on living in excess of 500 years. However, considering Shevat to be selfish, Taura separates from them and heads to the surface.

In the present day, Taura lives on the surface in hiding. When Fei and Elly are defeated by Ramsus in the Vendetta, they crash in the woods near Taura's Home. He is able to nurse them back to health using a nanoreactor. Taura is able to provide Fei with several benefits. First, through an emotional control device that applies nanomachines through a wristband, Fei is able to control his emotions and suppress Id. Taura also installs this technology in Weltall, and with the assistance of Balthasar upgrades it to Weltall 2. Taura also tells Fei and Elly about a mass driver military installation nearby. Using it they are successfully able to launch nanoassemblers into the atmosphere to remove the limiters from all the surface dwellers.

When numerous people mutate as a result of the removal of their limiters, Taura helps treat those who have only mildly mutated with nanomachines. Later, after Deus' resurrection and the emergence of Xenogears, Taura is able to use it to restore everyone's Gears to the state they were as omnigears, even though they now lack Anima Relics. In addition he equips them with disassembler devices which have the ability to counteract the nanomachines used in Deus' Seraph Angels. Taura can be visited at his home one last time around the end of the game where he provides the party some items.
