Block (XC2)

Blocking or guarding is a mechanic in the combat of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna ~ The Golden Country. When a character is hit by an attack, they have a chance to block the hit, halving incoming damage.
Overview[edit]
The block rate is the chance a hit will be blocked. For party members, this is primarily determined by the combination of weapon and Core Chip of the currently-active Blade, as well as the current level of affinity. Block rate tends to be higher for the weapons of TNK Blades. For enemies, block rate is determined separately for each enemy species; enemies may also have effects which increase their block rate beyond this, e.g. when they are enraged.
When a character blocks a hit, the attacker goes through a recoil animation which overrides the remainder of the attack animation (and cancels any remaining hits of the attack), during which time the attacker may not move nor attack. Certain enemies, as well as party members equipped with the Auto-Balancer or those performing Specials, are immune to this.
Blocked attacks cannot be critical hits, and evaded attacks (whether by high agility or perfect evasion) cannot also be blocked. Block rate increases by an additive 50% during a Special (so, for example, a 25% block rate becomes 75%).
The Ultimate Shield Aux Core and Skill RAM gives a 50% chance to cause incoming blocked attacks to deal no damage.
In-universe, Blades block attacks directed at their Drivers. When they do this, a spherical "beehive"-like shield appears around the Driver and/or Blade. This effect is also seen when Blades block attacks in cutscenes.
