The Encephalon is a virtual reality world in the Xenosaga series.

Description

In order to commence an Encephalon dive, the person are required to wear special goggles and be connected via, the U.M.N.. The Encephalon recreates the location to the smallest detail. It is so advanced that even if someone closes their eyes, they're still immersed in it.

Since the Encephalon connects to the U.M.N., there's a high probability that Gnosis will be encountered during the dive. Additionally, injuries sustained within the Encephalon can affect the mental state of the user outside of virtual space. Forbidden Devices are illegal Encephalon devices created by using U.M.N. data that was leaked by Vector Industries.

Virtual space constructed using memories as a data source.

An extremely realistic virtual space that can be created using U.M.N. location data, the uploaded recorded memories, and activities of individuals stored in the U.M.N.. The time and the place can be recreated as long as the data is available.

Encephalon dive is the process of entering the virtual space constructed by the Encephalon. Unvisited areas within the Encephalon can be explored because the U.M.N. data supplements information missing from the divers memory.

However, the Encephalon is still and unstable, memory-dependent space. For this reason, divers' memories that share a time and place have been known to resonate and unintentionally replay.

The word Encephalon comes from the Greek word "brain."

Xenosaga I & II

エンセフェロン

記憶を情報源として構築した仮想空間のこと。
エンセフェロンとは、極めてリアルな仮想現実空間の事であり、U.M.N.に存在するロケーション情報と、端末にアップロードされた人の記憶、及び行動記録を構造モデルとして構築されている。
データさえあれば、あらゆる時代や場所を、状況に応じて再現する事が可能である。
また、エンセフェロンダイブとは、そのエンセフェロン内部に構築された仮想現実空間に入り込む事を指し、ダイバーの記憶に依存する領域を自由に探索することが可能である。
これは、U.M.N.に蓄えられたデータがダイバーの記憶情報の足りない部分を補い、未踏の場所の情報を補完して再構築するためである。
しかし、エンセフェロンは、構成する一部を人の記憶に依存する不安定な空間であることは否めない。
そのため、エンセフェロンダイブした際に、時間と場所を共有したダイバーの記憶が共鳴し、意図せずに再生されてしまう現象も確認されている。
ギリシャ語でエンセフェロンは脳を意味する言葉である。
