Jack Vandham (ヴァンダム) is a major character in Xenoblade Chronicles X. He is the commander of BLADE and the main source of story-related assignments in New Los Angeles. Prior to being the commander, he led the Outfitters and was Chief Engineer of the White Whale and a Lieutenant Colonel under Nagi and Elma in the Coalition.

Appearance and personality

Jack Vandham is a muscular, middle-aged man with short blond hair that spikes up at its top. Additionally, he has a large horseshoe mustache pointing downward. His left arm has a tattoo with the letters "VDM" and a heart with the words "IRON HEART" in a banner above the heart.

Typically, he wears an armored tank top and combat pants. While he's an engineer by trade, he's also a talented soldier himself, being skilled with the Assault Rifle and knowing the weak points of indigens by heart. His general personality is jovial but fierce, since he knows how to praise a good meal and laugh, but he never holds back against anyone, regardless of who he's speaking to. As commander, he often gives advice to BLADEs and plans strategies for BLADE Missions, as well as handling a lot of the paper work for the organization.

In times of war, he often uses tactics to make him and his troops seem larger, first by calling himself Brigadier General Jack Vandham, Supreme Commander of the Defense Force of the Colony of New Los Angeles to the Ganglion, then by ordering all troops to attack them as soon as there was no sign they would retreat.

Lore

Forging BLADE

During the events of Forging BLADE, Vandham was in the bridge with Nagi when the White Whale crashlanded on Mira. He and the rest of the bridge worked to gather other lifepods and new crew members, and spent a lot of time working with the new Divisions as they were being formed.

• Interestingly, the introductory cutscene in Chapter 8 shows him standing next to a smoking cigarette, implying that he smokes.
• Vandham is well aware of H.B.'s ambitions to replace him as commander. He warns H.B. that even as commander, his goal of changing BLADE's internal structure won't be a simple task.
