Wels, also known as Reapers are mutant humans in Xenogears.

Description[edit]

Wels come in different of variety of shapes and forms. Their noticeable trait is their insatiable thirst for human blood to quench their pain brought about by their mutation.

Story[edit]

Wels have been plaguing the Aquvy region for seemingly unknown reasons. The Ethos would dispatch Etones like Billy Lee Black to deal with them. However, it is revealed by Isaac Stone to be a control system set up by Solaris, and that the Wels are in fact, humans mutated by Solaris. Krelian later unleashes several Wels on the Thames, which they are able to fend off on their own. In Solaris, the party witness Wels corpses being processed for food by the Soylent System. During the party's exploration of Krelian's Lab, they come across several people being turned into one before attacking them.

After the Limiters were removed through the Mass-driver, several people mutate into Wels due to a virus Krelian created and began attacking healthy humans, using their blood as a means to soothe their agony. In response, Solaris reactivated several Soylent System to lure the mutated humans to transform them into biological weapons in the guise of salvation. Fei and the party later destroys the remaining Soylent System facilities and in one of them, observes non-transformed 'haves' fighting with 'have-nots' transformed humans. It was there that Elly starts showing signs of being the reincarnation of Sophia. With the destruction of the Soylent System, the Wels were taken in at Nisan to be treated with Taura's nanomachines. While some manage to regain their human forms, some of the symptoms were too extreme, despite this, they did not fight among themselves.

Later, after Kahran Ramsus was tricked into killing Cain, the Gazel Ministry uses the Gaetia Key to turn a majority of humanity (including Solarians) into Wels for the resurrection of Deus which were absorbed after awakening. Those who were not absorbed are seen wandering the world map after the party regains the ability to access it.

True purpose

Wels are transformed humans intended to be the fleshy material for the Deus bioweapon. All humans born on the planet are destined to be parts for Deus, however, some humans lived through different generations, making those human incompatible with Deus.
