A Space-Time Anomaly is a phenomenon in the Xenosaga series. It describes the moment in which the border between the Imaginary Number Domain and the Real Number Domain of the Lower Domain blurs, causing space to warp.

Description[edit]

A Space-Time Anomaly is described as a phenomenon in which the border between imaginary space and real space blurs, causing space itself to warp. In Xenosaga I & II, dialogue from MOMO and chaos implies that the spread of a Space-Time Anomaly causes the very structure of the affected area's space-time continuum to be rewritten. As a result, the very history of that region of space will be altered, causing it to become unrecognizable.

A Space-Time Anomaly causes a Dimension Shift from real space to imaginary space as a result of energy flowing into the Lower Domain from the Upper Domain. Because Imaginary Number Domain existences cannot ordinarily be perceived from real space, objects that have shifted into imaginary space appear to have "disappeared" from the perspective of a Real Number Domain existence.

Story[edit]

Throughout the games, multiple instances of Space-Time Anomalies are shown or mentioned.

Lost Jerusalem[edit]

The mass disappearance on Lost Jerusalem caused by Grimoire Verum's link experiment between his daughter Nephilim and the Zohar is the first chronologically recorded instance of a Space-Time Anomaly. To avert the crisis from spreading to the rest of the universe, Vector Industries CEO Wilhelm caused a Dimension Shift to shrink the planet to Planck Scale.

Archon Cathedral[edit]

A Space-Time Anomaly-like event occurred at the Archon Cathedral when Voyager attempted to fulfil his pact with U-DO by gathering the People of Zohar. While it is not explicitly described as such in-game, it bears many of the hallmarks of a Space-Time Anomaly, namely the Imaginary Number Domain and the Real Number Domain becoming mixed up in one another.

Miltian Conflict[edit]

When the young Shion Uzuki witnessed the death of her parents at the hands of the 27-Series Asuras in the Acute Neurosis Treatment Facility on Miltia, she resonated with the Zohar (and by extension, U-DO) held in Labyrinthos. Her extreme despair caused a Space-Time Anomaly and provoked the mass-arrival of the Gnosis into real space. Joachim Mizrahi, in an attempt to save the rest of the universe from the Gnosis, managed to cut off Miltia and its surrounding area from the U.M.N. and plunged it into the Abyss created by the Space-Time Anomaly, effectively sealing Miltian space.

Ariadne[edit]

As a result of a link experiment done between a Zohar Emulator and U-DO, the planet Ariadne disappeared into imaginary space. Because of the Emulator's limited power, the anomaly caused was only a local event, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the universe. Ariadne was later found to have turned into a gigantic Gnosis, known as the Cathedral Ship.

Albedo's Anomaly[edit]

At the end of Xenosaga Episode II, Albedo makes contact with U-DO and causes a Space-Time Anomaly in Miltian space. The anomaly ceases when Jr. enters it and kills Albedo using the anti-U-DO waves from the Red Dragon.

Phenomenon in which real space and imaginary space come into contact and warp.

Phenomenon in which the border between real space and its opposite, imaginary space, blurs, and the composition of space itself warps.

Brought about by events such as a Zohar going out of control. The destruction of Miltia, Ariadne and Lost Jerusalem were all the result of space-time anomalies. These anomalies can be confirmed by EPR radar.

Trivia[edit]

  • In Xenoblade Chronicles 2, a similar phenomenon is mentioned in Chapter 10, described as a "space-time transition event". However, the terms used in both series' original Japanese versions differ from each other. Xenosaga's "Space-Time Anomaly" is originally written as "局所事象変移" while Xenoblade Chronicles 2's "space-time transition event" is written as "時空転移現象". It is currently unspecified if there is a canonical connection between these two terms.
