Music of Xenosaga: Pied Piper
The music of Xenosaga: Pied Piper consists of 14 looping music tracks, plus a jingle. All music was composed by TWO FIVE (Kousei Muraki and Tomokazu Ushiyama).
Functionality in-game[edit]
Like the music of other games in the series, the music of Pied Piper can broadly be split into cutscene themes, area themes (which play in the overworld), and battle themes (which play in combat). It also has one jingle which plays in the menu after a successful battle; no music plays in the title menu, and the in-game menu uses the area theme of the current area.
While the tracks all generally clearly follow one of the above primary functions, there are several instances where an area theme plays in a cutscene (or vice versa), or when a battle theme plays in a cutscene. These tend to be rare, with most exceptions only occurring once or twice in the entire game.
Musical style[edit]
The music is entirely in a chiptune style, due to the limitations of the Blackberry audio hardware. All non-jingle tracks loop; this is likely because essentially all cutscenes have dialogue which is manually advanced by the player, and therefore all gameplay situations last for an indefinite amount of time. The looping is audibly imperfect; an extra split-second of silence occurs at the loop point of every track.
No tracks within Pied Piper share motifs with one another, nor do they share motifs with any other music in the series.
