Minoth (ミノチ), also known as Cole, is a character in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna ~ The Golden Country. He is an experimental Flesh Eater and Amalthus's Blade.
Appearance and Personality[edit]
In Torna the Golden Country, Minoth is a tall man with olive skin and a rough scar over his right eye. His long brown hair is in a high ponytail, with a distinctive streak of hair hanging over his face. He has a shield shaped flesh-eater core crystal, and he wears cowboy inspired clothing consisting of a patterned brown bodysuit and chaps, as well as metallic gloves and long tassels that hang from his upper back. He wears a belt which contains his gun knives when they are not in use.
In Xenoblade Chronicles 2, he is significantly older and visibly deteriorated with dark grey skin, short hair, a beard and a hunched over posture. When he removes his cloak to show his core crystal, there is a scar surrounding it - likely a result of him being a failed flesh eater experiment.
Minoth is a jaded, pessimistic man with a shattered worldview after what he experienced and witnessed as Amalthus’ blade. He refers to himself as a “lousy mongrel” and despises his flesh eater transformation, even though it granted him the ability to act independently. He purposefully avoids meetings with Amalthus, and rarely responds when asked about him. He gets along well with Addam and the other members of the group, and has a dry sense of humour.
During the events of the main game, his personality is unchanged - though he has developed a soft spot for Iona and the other orphans. He is rather unattached from his life, but wishes to live long enough to create a play about Vandham.
Story arc[edit]
Xenoblade Chronicles 2[edit]
Chapter 3[edit]
After hearing that the party is at an impasse on their endeavor of crossing to the World Tree to reach Elysium, Vandham suggests that an old friend of his in Fonsa Myma might be able to help them. After the party reaches Mymoma Playhouse, they watch a play on the Aegis War written by Vandham's mate and go to meet him, who is revealed to be Cole. After the two banter about the old days, Vandham asks him about Elysium. Cole is at first taken aback by Vandham's question before noticing Pyra, understanding that the Aegis is back. He tells the party about a man who was able to scale the World Tree, advising them to try asking him. Before he tells any details about the man, he requests to have a word with Pyra alone.
In the room next door, the two discuss the play he wrote, whether Pyra will use her power as the Aegis once again, and Rex. Once their conversation has ended, Pyra calls Cole "Minoth", a name that he tells her he had almost forgotten. While looking for something, Cole has a coughing fit and Vandham decides to leave the matter of searching a way to the World Tree for the next day.
That night, Cole finally finds what he is looking for: an old dagger with a crystal in the hilt. Right at this moment, however, Malos and Akhos pay him a visit to inquire about the party. Cole refuses to give them any information, despite Akhos offering him to extend his life by fixing his ether flow. After he realizes that Iona has been taken away by Malos and Akhos, he comes to the party for help, pointing them to Olethro Ruins as their most likely location.
Chapter 4[edit]
After Vandham's burial, Cole gives the dagger he had previously found to Rex, telling him to take it to its owner in Indol as he will be able to tell them the way to Elysium. Cole then reveals to the party that he is a Flesh Eater and that the dagger's owner was once his Driver. He tells them what Flesh Eaters are and that he likely does not have long left to live. Before leaving, Rex asks Cole to write a play about Vandham, which he will return to see after he finds Elysium.
Torna ~ The Golden Country[edit]
While the party struggles with a monster on Olnard's Trail, Addam is forced to leave his back open to protect Mikhail and Milton. Right before impact, he is saved by a shot from Minoth's weapon. While the beast is stunned from the attack, Addam introduces Minoth to the party as Amalthus's Blade. After the Jagron gets back up for another round, he helps the party in taking down the enemy, getting interested in Jin and Lora's peculiar fighting style and their story.
After the battle, Minoth reveals to the party that he is a Flesh Eater. After Addam asks the Flesh Eater about Amalthus's whereabouts, Minoth explains that he has not seen him in two years and had decided to find the party and help them after hearing rumors of them entering Torna. Minoth recalls his last encounter with the Quaestor, after he was unable to prevent a soldier from murdering a family. During their conversation, he is frightened by Amalthus's bleak outlook.
While making camp, Minoth praises Jin and Lora's fighting style, stating that he is interested in it being the result of their bond, moreso than its power or technique. The day after, he officially joins the party, in order to keep tabs on Addam. He reminds the party of the dangers of Dannagh Desert, such as a disease called desert fever, something that Addam himself had forgotten.
Lore[edit]
- Minoth is originally awakened as a Blade by Amalthus
- Not long after that, he becomes a Flesh Eater using technology from Judicium, letting him live independently from Amalthus, though he considers himself a failed experiment.
- After Minoth sees Amalthus's real intentions, he comes to despise and avoid him.
- At some point after the events of Torna ~ The Golden Country, he splits from Addam to go on his own.
- At the beginning of Chapter 7, king Eulogimenos tells the party about a book describing Addam's travels after the war, which could have been written by Minoth.
- At some point, Minoth became a freelance mercenary, meeting Vandham and becoming friends with him.
- Eventually, the two separate from each other, with Vandham creating the Garfont Mercenaries and Cole settling down in Fonsa Myma, where he becomes the troup leader for a theater there, and adopting Iona.
- He is most likely the one that gave Vandham the idea of creating a village where war orphans could live, an idea that he himself got from listening in on Lora's conversation with her Blades during Safety Measures.

Trivia[edit]
- In Torna ~ The Golden Country, using the booster chip gives Minoth's weapon the name Full-Metal Gunknives. This is very similar to the class called "Full Metal Jaguar" in both Xenoblade Chronicles X and Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which both dual wield handguns like Minoth, and, in Xenoblade X, the class also has a second weapon called Dual Swords, paralleling the knife part of Minoth's gunknives.
- In the English version of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Cole is voiced by Eric Meyers, who also voices Sever, and K in Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
- In the Japanese version of Torna ~ The Golden Country, Minoth is voiced by Shin-ichiro Miki, who also voices Hermann in Xenosaga Episode II and Xenosaga Episode III.
