Sigmund is a character in Xenogears. He is Kaiser of the nation of Kislev.

Appearance and Personality

A native of the nation of Elru, Kaiser has one noticeable demi-human feature with his pointed ears. Otherwise he resembles a regular human. He has gray hair, brown eyes and a beard. Sigmund has good tactical abilities and judgment. He is an ambitious man and desired great power, which he was able to obtain, rising to the leader of the nation of Kislev.

Story arc

Kaiser was born in Elru, a country which fought against Solaris and was completely destroyed. As such he displays powerful ether abilities. He subsequently joined the military for Kislev and swiftly rose through the ranks eventually reaching the position of Kaiser, which was the highest rank in the Kislev military. He reorganized the military and expanded his power to also encompass the government. This caused conflict with the Imperial Battling Committee, whom he drove from power.

Sigmund is the father of Rico and was married to Rico's mother, Anna. Through a conspiracy by the Ethos, drugs were administered to Anna which resulted in Rico being born a demi-human. As Sigmund was on the front lines at the time in a battle with Aveh, the Ethos was able to successfully drive Anna and Rico out and lied to Sigmund, telling him his wife and child were dead.

Sigmund is first encountered in the game after the Yggdrasil is defeated in the desert by Id and Weltall is recovered in the aftermath. Sigmund's subordinate thinks this is a perfect time to launch an assault on Aveh, but Sigmund is cautious and would rather not exhaust their resources at this time. He then meets with Miang, dressed as the Executioner when she provides him with a Gatekeeper device.

The Imperial Battling Committee conspires to try and have Sigmund killed and frame Rico for it by causing his Gear to go out of control. Sigmund survives the assassination attempt however. After Fei wins the Battling Tournament, Sigmund requests a meeting at which time he asks Fei to join forces with him. However due to the unexpected arrival of Rico, who had sneaked into the palace, the meeting comes to a quick end. When Rico is able to make it into a room that is specifically coded via a DNA check to only permit Sigmund and his wife to enter, Sigmund is provided a hint as to who Rico really is, although he has a hard time believing it.

Sigmund does not appear again the rest of the game and cannot be found on disc 2, although he is not explicitly mentioned as having died.
