Hector Birtwhistle, commonly referred to as H.B., is a recruitable character in Xenoblade Chronicles X.
Although a Pathfinder by trade, he prefers to do the work of many of BLADE's divisions, and his goal is to succeed Vandham as BLADE's next commander.
Appearance and personality[edit]
H.B. rocks a tight and militaristic looking black BLADE top by default, and has loose brown trousers. H.B. wears his black hair short and organised, and wears glasses with black, square frames. He is commonly seen holding a assault rifle, or carrying a shield on his back.
Character Bio[edit]
Hector Birtwhistle is a logical man armed with untiring ambition and scholarly acumen. His judgment places the interests of the human race above all else—at times resulting in a rather cold impression.
Battle Style[edit]
H.B. is a strategist who can calmly formulate a battle plan for any situation. He uses a unique style based on the Shield Trooper class.
Story arc[edit]
A New Rival?[edit]
During A New Rival?, H.B. is first seen cutting into Cross and their party accepting a mission at the BLADE Concourse. He states that he's the better man for the job, and tries to ask them to pick a much easier mission. Upon noticing Cross's dissatisfaction, he decides to challenge them to complete three FrontierNav-related missions.
Once they complete the three missions, H.B. is taken aback, realizing his initial assessment was incorrect. He decides to take Cross's team on a mission to extract Solan, a notable scientist, who was attacked in by hostile indigens in Noctilum. Along the way, they come across a injured BLADE of Solan's escort team, who states that the scientist is still alive but hiding within a vehicle. H.B. coldly decides the rational option is to extract the scientist and do nothing more for the wounded BLADE, chastising Cross if they attempt to help him.
When they defeat the Thieving Dilus, Solan recognizes H.B. from college, but H.B. claims it was nothing personal. Solan indicates H.B.'s always been like this, however. H.B. congratulates Cross for their part in the mission, and states he's willing to accept Cross as his partner.
The King of Fear[edit]
During The King of Fear, a Nopon named Pulala specifically seeks him out. Eleonora referred her to him because he's willing to take on any mission as long as he's praised enough for his work. She explains that a Cavern Clan Prone named Blood-king Gelvo Banth has been killing Nopon on trade routes, and she needs his help to find his location. Depending on Noctilum's survey rate, H.B. either finds the base for her or seeks out Eleonora's guidance to survey more of Noctilum to find the base. Even though defeating the blood-king should be a Harrier job, H.B. vows to see the mission through until he is defeated. He believes that BLADE's system of segregated divisions is obsolete and he is willing to work to prove it.
When he reaches the blood-king's base, all that is left is a group of dead Nopon. One dying one warns that Gelvo Banth has left to target the Dodonga Caravan before dying himself. H.B. regrets that he wasn't able to save any of them, and angrily declares that the blood-king will not take another life.
H.B. and his team ambush the king at their camp at the Sapphire Table. Even though they manage to kill Gelvo Banth, H.B. is shocked at the blood-king's strength. He's genuinely grateful to Cross for being by his side during the fight, as he feared he would have died if he fought alone.
When H.B. returns, he receives more praise from Pulala, and he's happy knowing that his work has brough happiness to good people everywhere. That being said, he still wants to become BLADE's new commander.

Lore[edit]
- When H.B. calls out some of his Battle Arts, he will add or replace "Superior" into their name, like "Superior Decoy Round".
- The Arts he does this with are Wild Down, Trash Talk, Bombardier, Power Dive, Flash Grenade, Gunforce, Last Stand and Decoy Round, as previously mentioned
- Solan and H.B. were college buddies. He was surprised when H.B. enrolled in the military after graduating from university, as he doesn't understand his motivations.
- H.B. named the Superior Scepter found in Cauldros.

Trivia[edit]
- The affinity link between H.B. and Eleonora, "Will be my aide someday", only obtainable during The King of Fear mission, has strict conditions to be discovered, as it requires that the Noctilum survey rate be below 30%, which will force a dialogue with Eleonora to proceed.
