Fusion Combo
Fusion Combos are a mechanic in the combat of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna ~ The Golden Country. When a Driver Combo and Blade Combo are active at the same time, the result is a Fusion Combo. This provides several beneficial effects.
Overview[edit]
Fusion Combos are organised into stages. The stage of a Fusion Combo is given by the stage of the active Blade Combo plus that of the Driver Combo (Break representing stage 1, Topple representing stage 2, Launch representing stage 3, and Smash representing stage 4). For example, inflicting a stage 2 Blade Combo on an enemy suffering from Launch results in a stage 5 Fusion Combo.
It is possible to begin or advance a Fusion Combo by inflicting a Driver Combo stage on a stage 3 Blade Combo or a Blade Combo stage on Smash; however, the window for doing so is very short.
When the player-controlled Driver/Blade execute a Fusion Combo with stage greater than or equal to 4, or for a stage 3 Blade Combo on any Driver Combo stage, gameplay momentarily pauses to display a screen showing the current Driver and Blade Combo, as well as a sword, clock, and/or Party Gauge icon with up-arrows indicating the bonuses. If a Fusion Combo is executed otherwise, the current Driver and Blade Combo are shown in small text which does not interrupt gameplay. In either case, the battle narrator announces the Blade Combo and Driver Combo stage.
General effects[edit]
Fusion Combos increase the Party Gauge substantially: +10 for a stage 2-3 Fusion Combo, +15 for stage 4-5, and +20 for stage 6-7.
If an enemy is defeated with a Fusion Combo active (but not during a Chain Attack), the result is a "Joint Combo Finish". This increases the EXP, SP, and WP earned from the enemy by the following amounts:
Fusion Combo stage | Point bonus |
---|---|
2 | 40% |
3 | 50% |
4 | 60% |
5 | 70% |
6 | 80% |
7 | 100% |
Driver Combo -> Blade Combo[edit]
If a Blade Combo stage is applied during a Driver Combo stage, then for the remainder of the Driver Combo stage, party damage on the target is substantially increased. The effect is +50% for a stage 2-3 Fusion Combo, +75% for stage 4-5, and +100% for stage 6-7.
The damage bonus carries over into Chain Attacks. It ends when the Driver Combo stage expires or the Driver Combo is continued to the next stage. The bonus is additive with that of the Driver Combo stage.
Stacking[edit]
If a Blade Combo stage is applied during a Driver Combo stage (giving a damage boost) and then another Blade Combo stage is applied on the same Driver Combo stage, another damage bonus is granted which additively stacks onto the first one. This is often called a "double stack".
For example, if an enemy is Toppled and inflicted with Volcano, the party receives a 75% damage boost from the stage 4 Fusion Combo plus a 25% boost from the Topple. If the Volcano is then continued to Mega Eruption on the same Topple, the party receives another 75% damage boost (totalling +175% damage) for the remainder of the Topple.
In principle, one can perform arbitrarily many Blade Combo stages on the Driver Combo stage to further increase the damage boost. In practice, however, players are limited by the short duration of Driver Combo stages; getting more than a double stack, two Blade Combo stages on a Driver Combo stage, requires specific setups.
Blade Combo -> Driver Combo[edit]
If a Driver Combo stage is applied during a Blade Combo stage, the remaining duration of the Blade Combo stage and the total duration of the Driver Combo stage are both increased by 10% for a stage 2-3 Fusion Combo, 20% for stage 4-5, and 30% for stage 6-7. This stacks additively with other sources of Driver Combo duration increase. (The duration increase does not apply to stage 3 Blade Combos or Smash.)
If an enemy has a Blade Combo stage with a damage over time effect, Smashing the enemy increases the damage dealt per tick by 75% for a stage 1 Blade Combo and by 100% for a stage 2 Blade Combo. (The damage calculation is more complex if a Fusion Combo was active on the original Blade Combo stage; see Damage (XC2)#Blade Combos for details.) Repeated Smashes increase damage additively (they increase it by 75%/100% of the original DOT's damage, not the current damage).
Fusion Combo effect boosting[edit]
Several effects in the game improve Fusion Combos:
These stack additively with the effects from Fusion Combos. When multiple such effects are in play at once, they also stack additively with each other.
Additional interactions[edit]
- Restorative Fusion heals the party upon starting a Fusion Combo.
