FrontierNav
FrontierNav is the main navigation system used in Xenoblade Chronicles X. It is a specialized computer system which connects to a large sensor grid over the planet Mira comprised of Data Probes. Planting Data Probes grants access to the map of the continent and identifies segment recon activities that can be done to complete the survey of the planet.
Plot[edit]
According to Kirsty, FrontierNav was initially conceived as a modular exploration system for uncharted planets. It was developed on the White Whale.
Usage[edit]
The player first gets access to the FrontierNav map starting in Chapter 2, with full access to skip travel unlocked in Chapter 3 once they become a BLADE. It is located on the player's Wii U GamePad screen, referred to as a handheld comm device in-game.
The FrontierNav maps can be used while the player is not in combat. There are three main views:
- Segment View, which shows the locations of potential Data Probe installation sites, also known as FN Sites, as well as an overall segment recon requirement for each hexagon adjacent to an installed Data Probe.
- FrontierNav View, which shows the FN Sites and how they are connected, but also allows the player to set custom Data Probes. The player can see the production, revenue, and combat support abilities of the probe and the FN Site's ability to generate all three. Also, they can see all mineable Precious Resources at each FN Site.
- Map View shows a complete map of the area. It is initially obscured by darkened hexagons to indicate where the people of NLA haven't surveyed. However, once Data Probes are installed, the map is revealed. Additionally, many (although not all) of the location names are shown on the map.
Segments[edit]
FrontierNav divides the map into hexagonal segments in order to determine where Data Probes should go and where the player will need to go in order to consider that segment "explored". Exploration is required in order to unlock various Missions.
A "New" or a check mark icon indicates that the player can tap the screen for details about what is to be found in the hexagonal sector. Otherwise, the player will have to hear that info from someone in the city or at a base camp. Typically, someone with FrontierNav-related info will have a yellow speech bubble over their head.
The requirements for FrontierNav segment recon can possibly be found anywhere in the hexagonal area, even flying high above or underground in a cave.
The total of all completed FrontierNav segments is called the Mira survey. The map shows its completion as a percentage, both for all of Mira and for each region within it.
Mira[edit]
On Mira, the map is initially darkened, making it hard to see what lies ahead. However, installing Data Probes will brighten the map in the surrounding areas and reveal icons explaining what needs to be done to reconnoiter the area.
Each icon is usually surrounded by a border, with brighter colors indicating segments with higher-level enemies.
Data Probe: Indicates that there is a FN Site in the area. If the party reaches the FN Site and (in the Wii U version) has the Mechanical Field Skill at a high enough level, they can install the probe and reveal the requirements for any adjacent segments, as well as Fast Travel there.
Treasure: Indicates there is a Treasure Box of some sort in the area. With the right field skill, it can be opened for BP, EXP, and items.
Story Mission: Indicates the location where Story Missions need to be started in the BLADE Barracks. Once all story missions in the game are completed, segment recon is completed.
Mission: Indicates that a mission needs to be completed in order to complete segment recon. The Definitive Edition further uses icons to distinguish between Normal Missions and Basic Missions.
Affinity Mission: Indicates that an Affinity Mission needs to be completed in order to complete segment recon. There is often an icon both within NLA and on one of the continents for these missions.
Tyrant: Indicates that a Tyrant in the area needs to be defeated in order to complete segment recon.
Locked: Indicates that the current segment cannot be completed yet, due to a lack of required progress in the main story or other missions.
Resolved Segment Recon: The segment recon in this area has been completed.
In the Definitive Edition, increasing the survey rate will grant rewards like Energy Clips, Credits, and even Data Probes. Rewards are granted for every 5% of a continent surveyed.
New Los Angeles[edit]
New Los Angeles typically has different segment recon objectives. As it is the BLADE home base, the map is entirely visible. However, only treasures, normal missions, and Affinity Missions are immediately visible on the FrontierNav screen, with the other segments types below requiring their own work. These do not have their own icons in the Wii U version, but they do in the Definitive Edition.
Character Hangout: Meeting a playable character at their usual spot. Talking to them there usually allows the player to recruit them.
Heart-to-Hearts: Meeting a playable character while they're off duty. This requires meeting them at a specific time and with enough Affinity. Occasionally, a pet dog or cat needs to be set at the BLADE Barracks so they can interact with it.
Affinity Shifts, also known as Situations: This typically happens when a NLA resident has a problem that doesn't require the full might of BLADE to solve. Talking to them and introducing them to another resident will complete segment recon.
List of segments[edit]
Due to the large number of individual segments, listing them here is impractical. They are displayed on the page for each region under the header "FrontierNav segment map". Alternatively, see the pages in Category:FrontierNav segments for detailed information about each segment.
