Boundary
- "Bravery (XC3)" redirects here. For other uses, see Bravery (disambiguation).
The Boundary is a ship in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The party uses it for quick transportation around Erythia Sea.
The Boundary is later replaced by the Bravery, which fulfils the same purpose with upgraded mobility and additional capabilities: a cloaking device like those of the Armories, a beehive-like shield to protect its bow, and a knife-like ram. This is used by the party to traverse the Great Sea and break into Origin.
When the party pilots the Boundary, Sailing the Seas plays as an area theme. The Great Sea Stirs is the equivalent theme for the Bravery.
As a gameplay element[edit]
When the party spawns in the Cadensia Region, the Boundary or Bravery appears within Erythia Sea at an appropriate location. Holding A when near it causes the party to embark. When inside, holding A again causes them to disembark and spawn in the water. The player can target enemies while the party is inside the ship, but not fight them; when targetting an enemy, pressing A instantly causes a disembark.
When inside the Boundary or Bravery, holding ZR propels the ship forward, and holding B sends it into reverse. Pressing D-Pad up while holding ZR locks the ship into going forward until D-Pad up is pressed again.
The ship is steered by holding right or left on the left stick. If the ship is moving forward, holding in a direction on the left stick causes the ship to turn until its bow faces that direction (with respect to the current camera angle); if the ship is moving in reverse, the same input turns the stern to face that direction instead. The ship does not turn if the left stick is currently being held at the angle the ship's (bow or stern) is facing; it also does not turn if the ship is neither in forward nor reverse.
The Bravery also has a "Boost" option, toggled by clicking the left stick. This activates the ship's jet propulsion burners, increasing its forward acceleration and maximum velocity (but, in turn, increasing the turn radius).
The Cabin of the Bravery can be accessed as a Rest Spot when piloting it by pressing ZL and D-Pad down. After the party infiltrates Origin, the cabin can be used as a skip travel point to return to the start of the Origin Interior.
Story[edit]
In order to break into Li Garte Prison Camp and free Ghondor, the party must get across Erythia Sea. At Monica's suggestion, the party speaks to Samon in the City's engineering team (initiating the quest Castle Access). Samon suggests that the party use a ship, which can hide within the black fog on the surface of Erythia Sea and stay out of radar view, and offers the Boundary for their use.
However, to fuel the Boundary, 300 Ether Cylinders are needed, which the party procures with Timna and Miyori's help. By the next day, Samon has installed the Ether Cylinders and the Boundary is made available to the party. Noah also spies some blueprints by Samon for an "ultimate vessel" which, according to Samon, could even withstand the Great Sea. In the meantime, Riku pilots the Boundary for the party to get them around Erythia Sea.
Much later at the start of Chapter 7, Nia tells the party that Origin lies in the centre of the Great Sea's vortex. Noah remembers Samon's blueprints, and the party quickly dashes back to the City to ask him about them. By this time, Samon has finished the ship's hull, but not the engine, which needs a number of parts of Origin Metal to be completed. The party collects these during The Ultimate Vessel and Side Story: Noah, allowing Samon to complete the ship, which he now calls the Bravery.
Riku and Noah pilot the Bravery to Origin past Erythia Sea and across the Great Sea, together with an Armory escort from the Lost Numbers. When the Bravery gets close to Origin, it rides up a vortex and rams through the top of Origin to land in its interior.
