Story[edit]
Pied Piper[edit]
Episode I[edit]
The Red Testament is first seen with Wilhelm discussing about the information they have been reported on by KOS-MOS. The Blue Testament later attacks the party in the Song of Nephilim, allowing Albedo to escape. The Blue Testament later reveals himself to be Luis Virgil on top of his E.S., Naphtali while observing Proto Merkabah, complaining to the Red Testament to not to talk to him telepathically. In the ending, the Red Testament is talking to Wilhelm, saying Albedo is the only one who can open the gate to Abel's Ark.
Episode II[edit]
The Red Testament is seen speaking with Wilhelm, telling him that they've detected Albedo's ascension. The Black Testament's E.S., Dan attacks Shion while she escapes from the Dämmerung. Later in the game, the Testaments arrive at the Ω System and kill Sergius XVII who then revived Albedo. Ziggy recognizes the Black Testament as Voyager and attempts to kill him to no avail. The Testaments are later seen in the ending, welcoming the new White Testament with their master, Wilhelm.
Episode III[edit]
The Testaments are first seen at Rennes-le-Château, observing the coffin of Mary Magdalene.
Characteristics[edit]
Testaments wear full body armor and long, hooded cloaks. The color of their armor depends on the individual. They typically conceal their faces with bird-shaped masks that match their outfit's color. Their mission is to aid Wilhelm in enacting Eternal Recurrence. Using Program Canaan, a system installed in select few Realians, Wilhelm is able to locate candidates; namely, those with the ability to resonate with a Vessel of Anima. To become a Testament, one must lose their anchor to the physical realm, their own physical body, only accomplished through death.
Upon dying, a Testament's individuality is able to be maintained by Wilhelm, preventing that person's consciousness from returning to the Collective Unconscious. As a result, that person becomes a purely Imaginary Number Domain existence, similar to a Gnosis. From imaginary space, the Testaments are able to manipulate real space at will. The "physical forms" they are portrayed as throughout the series are merely perceptions they have projected onto the consciousnesses of the characters. Each Testament has their own set of unique abilities and ulterior motives separate from Wilhelm's goals.
Blue Testament[edit]
- Main article: Luis Virgil
The Blue Testament is a A.G.W.S. pilot, Luis Virgil. He became a Testament after being killed by KOS-MOS while fending off a Gnosis attack on the Woglinde. After becoming a Testament, Virgil gained superhuman strength. He can also transform into a angelic Gnosis called Ein Rugel. In Shion's subconscious, Virgil can also project a demonic figure to aid him in battle. Virgil's E.S. is Naphtali.
Following Febronia's death during the Miltian Conflict, Virgil expresses great disdain for Realians and rejects himself as a front for his grief and regrets. In truth, Virgil seeks out Eternal Recurrence for affirmation of the events of the Miltian Conflict and to overcome his grief for the love he lost. It isn't until he returns to the Miltia of the past during the events of Episode III that he finally reconciles with himself and Febronia, rejecting Eternal Recurrence and revoking himself of his Testament powers.
Black Testament[edit]
- Main article: Voyager
The Black Testament is the U.M.N. cyberterrorist, Erich Weber, also known as Voyager. He became a Testament after accepting Wilhelm's offer to become one during a confrontation with Jan Sauer at the Archon Cathedral and is the oldest Testament. Voyager's reason to become a Testament was to escape the fear of death and obtain eternal life. After becoming a Testament, Voyager gained superhuman strength. He can also attack using miasma through a demonic figure. Voyager's E.S. is Dan.
Voyager's goal was always a lust for power and immortality, ever since he first came into contact with U-DO. He desperately seeks ascension above all else in terms of both knowledge and power. However, his hubris would be his own undoing. In Episode III, Canaan is able to tempt Voyager into using Program Canaan to absorb the power of the Compass of Order at the ruins of the Archon Cathedral. Thinking he'd obtain the power of a god, Voyager is unable to contain the compass's power. He and Canaan both are annihilated as a result, at the very place he had become a Testament a century prior.
Red Testament[edit]
- Main article: Kevin Winnicot
The Red Testament is former Vector Industries's chief engineer, and Shion Uzuki's lover, Kevin Winnicot of the KOS-MOS project. He became a Testament after being killed by the KOS-MOS archetype on the planet Carioca. In addition to superhuman strength, Kevin gained electrokinetic powers, can attack with aura-like waves, as well as transform into an armored demonic knight cloaked in smoke. Additionally, he can telepathically communicate with other Testaments. Kevin's E.S. is Judah.
Kevin came to know Wilhelm and learn of Eternal Recurrence at a young age, not long after the death of his mother. Traumatized by said death, Kevin hates the world and accepts Eternal Recurrence in the hopes of a new world to live in with those he loves. As he grew older, this motivation came to include his lover, Shion. However, because Eternal Recurrence behaves as a set loop, his hopes are unrealistic and would not come to be fulfilled even if Eternal Recurrence was successful. At the end of Episode III, Shion rejects Kevin, knowing his goals would come at the cost of her friends and family. Kevin finally comes to reject Eternal Recurrence himself after witnessing Wilhelm torture Shion.
White Testament[edit]
- Main article: Albedo Piazzolla
The White Testament is the immortal U.R.T.V., Albedo Piazzolla. He became a Testament after being killed by another U.R.T.V., Gaignun Kukai Jr. in the Space-Time Anomaly created after the destruction of the planet Miltia. He is the most recent Testament. Unlike the other Testaments, Albedo does not take advantage of any of the unique powers that come with being a Testament beyond simply having another chance at life. Albedo's E.S. is a modified Simeon.
Albedo's true wish has little to do with Wilhelm or Eternal Recurrence. Albedo only became a Testament in the hopes of having a chance to literally reunite with his formerly-conjoined twin, Jr. This was a deep seated desire that existed within Albedo since he first learned that he was alone in his immortality. Hoping to spend his days with his best friend and brother Jr., living for eternity in loneliness is his biggest fear. When Jr. confronts Dmitri Yuriev in Abel's Ark, Albedo nearly abandons his desire to unite with his brother in an attempt to save his life. However, Albedo's other brother Gaignun Kukai is able to intervene, managing to simultaneously save Jr. and join Albedo's consciousness to Jr.'s body.
Lore[edit]
- Added dialogue in Xenosaga I & II implies that Patriarch Sergius XVII knew of the Testaments because he was told he was chosen as a candidate, but "had no intention of joining [them] yet".

Testament
Beings that have slipped the bonds of normal space.
Wilhelm's aides; each wears a different color of cloak. They are the post-death form of Kevin and the others; however, they are not reincarnations, but beings that have slipped the bonds of normal space--their bodies. They can exert their abilities by accessing normal space from imaginary space (their consciousness) and controlling its physical phenomena at will.
By controlling physical phenomena, they also act directly upon the perception of those in normal space; you could see them as if they actually were there, even though your retinas would not be receiving any photons. Since they act directly upon the perception of their target, they will not appear in photographs or videos that rely on the action of photons (though they can act on these devices to appear in them).
Once, long ago, a group of people that reacted purely to chaos' Anima power (whether these were previous incarnations of Jin, Virgil, and Voyager or the consciousness of other people entirely is unknown) guided the world to destruction.
To form an anti-existence to these people who reacted purely to the power of Anima--the fail-safe of the universe--the consciousness of people were controlled and made to enter opposed-phase, resulting in the birth of the Testaments.
Wilhelm does not need to shift everyone into opposed-phase in order to achieve his goal. once the mass had reached a certain critical mass, everything else will have their phases shifted in a chain reaction. The current Testaments are that certain critical mass.
Wilhelm has forged a certain pact with the Testaments. This serves not just to have them do whatever he wishes, but also to supplement Wilhelm's temporal recurrence ability. (Just as the failsafe needs the power of Anima to work, Wilhelm needs the power of the opposed-phase Anima. Mary will serve as the fuse to ignite that power.)
The rendezvous which Virgil shared with Febronia was everything to his existence. He wanted to feel that moment forever; he is who he is today thanks to Febronia's death--this is what h believed. Wilhelm presented Virgil with that eternal time.
He also presented Albedo with the ability to make his original wish come true. On the surface, Albedo appeared to act only on the desire to destroy, but this was a form of separation anxiety; essentially, his real desire was to integrate with Jr..
Jr.'s destiny was to be used as a pawn to Dmitri's elimination of U-DO; one wonders if Albedo knew that all along. Albedo's desire to unite with Jr. was a form of protective consciousness in action--with the power of a Testament, he could face off against Dmitri to protect Jr. and ultimately realize his original goal of sharing consciousness with Jr. and gaining eternal rest. This is what Wilhelm presented to him, and that is what made him act.
