Auto dialogue (XC2)

Auto dialogues, autotalk in the code, are dialogues between non-talkable NPCs in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna ~ The Golden Country. They happen automatically when the party is at a close enough distance from them on the field. Auto dialogues do not interrupt gameplay like regular dialogue, with the player being able to walk, start battle and talk to NPCs as usual. These dialogues serve as a way to give insight into the daily lives of Alrest's inhabitants, make cities feel more lively, as well as to give bits of lore about a certain item, NPC or character. These dialogues can appear or change depending on the time of the day, story progression, and quest completion.
Length of auto dialogues can vary between one and four speech bubbles, though the vast majority of instances have two speech bubbles.
An auto dialogue that just happened or was interrupted can happen again by either going a short distance away from the involved NPCs and coming back, entering and exiting a menu, or simply by switching Blades.
In Torna ~ The Golden Country[edit]
While auto dialogues instances are more "static" in the main game, with the vast majority never changing between the first and last chapter, auto dialogues in Torna ~ The Golden Country are more dynamic. As such, most later quests in Torna ~ The Golden Country will result in at least one auto dialogue changing or appearing. The Community's level will also affect which auto dialogues appear or change, which serves to reflect the increasing support the party garners. Auto dialogues will change depending on story progression, like in the main game, though it is much more frequently seen.
